Russia will probably realize her mistake when aba awakes to some new disaster caused by the wide-awake Brown men. In this issue will be found an arti cle descriptive of the growth and merit* of the Orr^on Daily Journal published at Portland. This Journal baa come to stay; it ia filling a long- felt want in tbe Pacific Northwest, and deserve« a liberal patronage. Thing« political are assuming shape aud elsewhere will be found the an nouncement of Hon. R. D. Hume, who i* desirous of tbe nomination of Seuetor, for Coo« and Curry, on tbe Republican ticket Curry has never been given so much prominence on tbe ticket but there is no valid rea son why it might not have first place once. Mr. Hume has twice served Coos aud Curry Counties, aa Joint Representative, ia well acquainted with tba requirements of the office to which be aspire«, end is competent to fill it, end look after tbe interest« of hi« conatitnents. A “Poli.ical B om ’1 i* generally looked upon with a large degree of di-favor, and not infrequently be de serve* all he receives, yet nevertheless there is veet difference between men of thia elee*, and a good political boss i* a* meet to be admired, as a bad oue i. to be despised. In noting th* difference we eeeone going ahead prompted by that which ia right and just, aud fearlessly championing tbe best iutereets of his fellow-msn. while on tbe other baud, tbe bad leader sbovee himself ahead to achieve ag grandisement, and satisfy hie own ambition* at tbe expense and to tbe exclusion of bis fellow creature*. A Nawdsy leaae wf the Joaraal. lima cornua in ilia history of * news- paper that it is taken for it* own aake, that people become attached to the priuoaple* whijh it pofaunas ami it* method* of preeeutiug the news, th* reader* begin to regard it an a hardship that the new* held ia Hot covered for them every day io the week aud that ou one day they muut tarn Io other auj leea favorite »oarc ee for their eulightenmeut. There oomee a time when this demand be come* *o insistent that it can no long er be denied. It ia this stage that the Jour ml baa reached. The demand for a Sunday morning inune of the Journal baa become ao widespread that it can no longer be resisted. Following its usual custom to meet every reason able demand marie upon it by the people it serves and who has faith fully stood by it from the start, it has determined to put forth a Sunday morning Mane on ibe 2U*h of the preaent month. This will menu tba for six days each week, that is, every week day, The Journal will be print ed in tbe evening, wbileon one day in the week, that ia Sunday, it will be printed as a morning newspaper All arrangements are now practi cally completed for a superb staff of writers, men and .women of national fame. It ia proposed to make of tbe issue tbe most popular newspaper ever issued in Oregon. It will have its own leased wire service to cover tbe news folly and adequately and much more picturesquely than it has ever before been done in Portland. It will embrace many novel features, many new and striking methods, but it will stick closely to the fearless policy which in two years has placed tbe evening issue far in the forefront io its field, and which we venture to say will, in much less time, give its Sun day issne unchallenged first place in that particular field. Itineorc Bising frena the Ashen Tbe way in which Baltimore bs-> token bold has excited the suppose aud admiration of the American poo pie. Tbe first great example of courage apd determination in tbs face of seemingly irreparable calmity was that displayed by Chicago in 1871 which fought its way back to tbe front with tho most marvelous exhibition of recuperative powers that tbe country had ever seen. Chi cago’s push and hustle became prov erbial terms and we of the west were inclined to ascribe it to tbe section of tbe country rather than to individual Americans from all sections. Such things they oould do io the west, but in tbe effete east it took them so long to get in motion that really spool acu lar rejuvenation, such as that dis playe 1 io Chicago, was utterly im possible. But Baltimore is a southern city, ■taid and conwrvativ«', aud quite tbe last place to which the bust ling west looked for an object lesson in marvel ous enterprise and daring. And yet that ia precisely what Baltimore has done. No city io tbe country^ ea.-. or west, equid have made a better showing. Confronted with enormous fire losses and with its buisness sec tion wiped out, it relied entirely upon its own resources to pull ite self together. Already they are begin ning to get order out of chaos and the people are at work night and day rearing new structures to take tbe place of those which' were swallowed in tbe conflagration. Tbe uowspa pars, we ere glad to perceive, are iu van of such work and have overcome almost insurmountable difficulties iu scouring new quarters and equip moots so as to print their issues in Baltimore instead of Washington, where they were forced to go when the calamity first struck them. So long as such spirit is extant in this country, not in one section but in all parts of it, no one needs to fear for its future or be suprised at its mstorial progress, 1 UlALS Ok l CLARENC1 Y.
