Fresh testimony in great quantity is constantly coming in, declaring Dr. King's New Discovery for Con sumption. Coughs and Colds to be tiueqnaled. A recent expression from T. J. McFarland, Bentorville, Vs., serves as example. He writes: “I bad Bronchitis for three years and doctored all tbe time without being benefited. Then I l>egan taking Dr. King’s New Discovery, and a few bottles wholly cured me.” Equally effective in curing all Lung and Throat troubles, Consumption, Pneu monia and grip. Guaranteed by C. Y. The Congressional whitewash brush can cover up more disreputable de fects than any other brush ever in vented. The Oregon Legislature assembled last Mouday and organized by adopt ing the old organization. A resolu tion was offered to transact no busi ness except to correct the tax list, but ¿be resolution was referred to the committee on resolutions. The law makers are assembled, and it remains to be seen when they will adjouro. Taj) »bout anarchy! There is more genuine anarchy in some of the large business corporations than iu half of tbe other organizations in the coun try. Near Sunset, California, an oil company destroyed the grading of tbe Santa ,Fe Railroad Company, across some lands it wanted the right of way across, then moved a bouse on to tbe place wbero tbe grading had been, And installed an armed guard to keep tbe railroad company’s employees from working oq tbe grade again. If this is not anarchy, it will be bard to give it a name. However, large cor porations are like kings; they can do jio wrong. But it may be different, where two of them, as in the present iustauce, are operating in opposition Port Orford Fribune: We learn that our statement last week that tbe laud coutest of N. C. Divelbies vs. Oscar Mather was won by Divelbiss, jvbh not entirely correct. Contestant contested eighty acres of Mather's homestead entry, claiming the laud to be mineral in character. The local Jaud office decided that 30 acres was fuiu ral, aud 50 acres agricultural, or u other words, Divelbiss got 30 acres, and Mather 50 acres. Matber ap pealed. Telegram; Colombia says it will try every peaceable means to have the United States recognize its rights under tbe treaty of 1846, and if these fail there is uotbing left but war. Un der tbe circumstances there is no need pt present for President Roosevelt to issue a call for volunteers. l’abile Apology demanded from Turk. Washington. Deo. 16.—The Secre tary of State this afternoon announced that the insult to Consul Davis must be officially atoned for in a most pub lic manner. Minister Leisbmann ca bles that the officials responsible will make an apology?and express their regret. Mr. Davis will be taken on board either tbe San Francisco or Brooklyn, aud carried from Beirut to Alexaudretta, where tbe apologies, as promised will be made aboard ship. Men — goo ----- Dries, and Mil ips Left High on Hand. London, Dec. 16.—Advice« received here tell of the strange freak of the eea of Azof, north of the Black sea. which is drying up with such rapidi ty that ships at anchorage at Tagan rog >ire left high and dry. Tagaurog, a city of 50,000 population, ia buried under clouds of sand which are being blown all over the shore. There is going on at the prerent time a steady advance iu the strength of I be metal nsed in guns, says John F. Meigs io the Scientific American’s Special Number on Iron and Steel. The elastic strength of metal now commonly used in larger guus is about 50,000 pounds per square inch, and in the smaller guns it runs as tfigh as 75,000 pounds per square inch. This, however, is used only as an additional margin of safety, largely because the recoil of guns when fired is so great uow, and the reaction thereby set up in the carriage is so severe that nothing would be gained by lightening the gun. Lightening the gun would only mean putting ad ditional weight, aod perhaps a weight greater than that saved, in the gnn- carriage and foundation. Many are of the opinion that the advance in the strength of gun steel should be pushed further, but it would be bard to do this without lowering to some extent the elongation asked for in the meta! at rupture. This now runs io the neighborhood of 18 to 25 percent, and it could wisely be lowered for the sake of gaining a harder and stronger metal, because the entire operation of the gun is witbin its elastic limit. When it moves outside of this and be comes permanently enlarged, a com paratively slight enlargement would give warning, and the gun would be laid aside and not need any more. recognised tire gon lan. authority—The Apothecary, Is just in receipt of a uew end fresh stock of Ileimrtment Of The latetl«r, L aku Ornes at R ovebvbo . Technically considered, tbe number is one of the best of |tbe special issues which bave so far been prepared by tbe Scientific American. Each article bears tbe stamp of absolute certainty of fact— a certainty gained by a personal ex amination of each of the plants de scribed. Instead of giving a cod - deused account of a large number of less important works, tbe editor« bave wisely adopted tbe plan of «electing a certain (number of large industrial establishment«, and of giving them a very thorough description. Among tbe more notable articles of tbe issue may be mentioned those on armor plate and gun steel, structural shapes, tube making, chain making, steel and wire making, and rail making. Tbe number is dressed in a handsome col ored cover. “Wine is a mocker; strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." He mav pass as a wise man in some directions. In deed, be may seem to he endowed with a deal of gray matter, but if be allows strong drink to sway him, if is because the animal predominates. There is a coarseness about him which forbids the exercise of those finer qualities which make men strong iu the moral world.
