Tbe Porta may flatter himself that ha is ruler of the barbarous Turk, but with Russia and Austria banding in ultimatums, it begins to appear that tbe Sick Man baa donned a straight j acket All is not rosea with tbe President of Columbia, and now that Panama has seceded and gained her liberty through recognition of tbe United States, Colombian citizens are crying “Down with Marroqnio.” This coun try's recognition of Panama makes it an object of hatred to some of the Columbians. San Domingo is having another re bellion, or revolution, it ia bard to de termine wbicb. If tbe government ie victorious, it will be a rebellion or in surrection; but if therebelsprsvail.it will be a revolution. It is au off day when some of those countries lying in Central or South America, cannot puli off a rebellion. Hundreds of people in New York were willing to sell tbeir right ear for 95000. bnt weie unable to prodneeone tbe right size aud shape, and tbe man wbo wants to fit ont at the expense of some other party, has bad to give np the task. However, that so many persons were willing to part with an ear to obtain the stipulated sum, does not speak well for tbe social system uud»r wbicb we live. China is worrying again. The Brit ish Lion has possessions on her West, and tbe Russian Bear on her North, and «be bus apprehension that one or tiie otiisr may want to feast on her carOBis. Just uow she is most afraid of the Linu. aud wants the Bear to aid her, while next week it may be tbe Lion she seeks for her friend. Under tbe circumstances the best thing she can du to ease her mind, ia to set the Bear aud the Lion to fighting each other; there is nothing like keeping idle folks busy to save trouble. Tbe question now is, will tLere be u special session of tbe Legislature! It seems that under the emergency wbicb bus arisen, there should be one. It coats money to convene tbe legis lature, $15,000 being tbe estimate, but it will coat many times that much to pav the interest that will necessarily entail upon state cuntities, cities and school districts, because of tbe delay of tbe necessary funds to carry on tbe purposes for which they were created. Ji may be some.)bat critical to con, venw tbe law makers, but it is not a good thing to do to let tbe state and minor divisions get into chaotic con- dilioua Tbe interest in tbs latter case will over balance tbe coat of con vening the law makers. Only Makes A Had Matter Worse. Perhaps yon have never thought of it, but the fact must be apparent to every ooe that constipation ia cansed by a lack of water in tbe system, and tbe use of drastic cathartics like tbe old fashioned pills, only makes a bad matter worse. Chamberlain’s btom- [tch and Liver Tablets are much more mild and gentle in their effect, and when tbe proper dose is takeu their action is so natural that one can hard ly realize it is tbe effect of a medicine. Try a 25 cent bottle ot them. For sale by C. Y. Lowe, Druggist. Bnoday Welcome! Senator Hanna is au acrobat of tratieoeudaut agility. Surely it ia not base flattery to say this of a man wbo can uoapariogly deuouuce the democratic party for briogiog on tbe hard limes in |893, aud then iu tbe same speech praise without stint Grover Cleveland, wbo was then at the bead of that party. The Commoner:—Schwab and his companions made 920,000,000 on tbeir investment of $10,000,000 in tbe ship building trust, and on top of that they wanted Uncle 8am to give them a subsidy, Uncle Sam naa earned tbe reputation of being *a easy mark among tbeffiaaueial ‘-grafters.” Mnfle Tana« Agate. ‘One of Dr. King's Naw Life Pilla each night fur twq weeka baa put me ia my ’teena* again.” writes D. Rockefeller aeil Traut. tbe A 8n<. (Mag. Miet* I A brief dlapatcb IO yeaiKday'a Journal mmle tbe annonucruieui I bat tba Hoeknfeliar interests wean no* dominant io tbe steel trust instead of J. Pierpont Morgan. Il woold not be at all surprising should this prove to be true. It in an open secret ibst for a oomberof years tbe Rockefeller interests in Standard Oil and other* wise bare made ao much money that it was nest to impossible to find in vest moot for it. The investments sought were not necessarily those which were likely to produce immedi ate dividends, bat which might be counted on io tbe future to be sate, and perhaps profitable. They could afford to wait, as, for instance, they bad waited in tbe Mawiaba iron mines. 1'beee mine* were ultimately turned into tbe steel trust at a tremendous profit, and it was through them that tbe Rockefellera secured tbeir heavy interest in that great conoern and tbeir representation on its executive board. Perhaps, too, bocauaeof this interest added to tbe need of seeking new investments, tbeir attention was attracted to the Colorado Fuel A Iron Co., a corporation operating in four states and territories, and employing over 20,000 men, the only big Western eleel company which is uot in tbs trust. This company is now controlled by a combination of tbe Rockefeller and Gould interests Having now ab solute control of this company, what more natural than that they should extend their holdings in the steel trust, particularly when that stock was tumbling to such a point that public confidence in it was destroyed and so many people were anxious to get rid of it at almost any price! Thia would be a logical outcome, a move in the direction of an absolute monopoly of tbe steel business, whose stupendous record in tbe past few years will soon again be duplicated. It is but a following out of the old Standard ,/il idea which is tbe basia of tbe greatest fortune ever gathered together in the history of tbe country and which would mean a tremendous accession to that fortune io tbe pres ent generation through tbe medium of steel. If tbe news is not literally true at this moment, it only autici pates what will surely happen io tbe immediate future. Then a change will come over American Steel, its prices will immediately atffen, and whatever may be the effect otherwise, tbe whole vast enterprise will be con ducted on a basis of the strictest bus iness and to produce tbe highest pos sible results economically aud materi ally in tbe wide ramifications of its present products,—Portland Journal.
