Socialism is gaining. It ia an in- stitutioo founded upon principles, and those principle« bear the impress of eternal truth. Socialism is world wide, and its devotees are increasing, and although there is much imputed toil that is falHP, eliminate that which is foreign to its principles and go where yon will, the wovld over, or view it where ever the light of truth fiaebea upon it. it discloses a condi tion io which mercy, justice and love a lion nd, and io which greed and selfish tiess have no place. It lies oo the border of eternal salvation and when a proper appreciation of the Creator is admitted to its precincts perfection shall have been almost reached. A New Statina, The Southern Pacific Company baa built a large and commodioua station at Fair Grounds, which willbeappre ciated by the traveling public. The Dew statiou is very neat and attractive, and tills a long-felt want The man agement of the state fair feels partic ularly pleasel over the neat station and they say that it ia a good attract ion for the fair. The Pawning of Lorenzo D. Major Lorenzo D. No time in the bistoryof the Ore gon state fair has there been «rich n good feeling among the agricultural Classes towards the Biiccess of tbe fair as oxists at the present time. Every section of tbe sista seems to betaking an interest in tbe fair and promises to give it tbeir hearty support. Live stock from al) over tlia» state is being prepared for this year'a fair. There are reasons for this awaken ing of tbe people to the support of jbe fair. When a rich and powerful corpora tion, enjoying tbe privileges of per forming a public aerviee at high rates of compensation ia not content with a profit of a million dollars a year, but seeks by unlawful mean» to double or treble its annual receipts, that cor poration is teaching anarchy by ex ample. When a merchant occupies one of tbe principal thoroughfares of the city as a private shipping yard, and subjects all passersby to great incon venience, loss and delay, that merob- and is teaching anarchy by example. When a corporation, or gronp of corporal ions, organize tbe legislature of Illinois for purposes of public plunder, tbe persons responsible for that organization are teaching an archy by example. When men oorrnpt and debauch tbe city council to get from it exclu sive and profitable privileges, they are teaching anarchy by example. Men who, as private individuals or as members of a corporation, have been teaching anarchy in Ibe manner described may arise at tbe meeting of social or reform organiza'ions aud denounce lawlessness, as practiced by tbe “lower classes,” bnt their words will fall on unsympathetic ears. They will not gain the confidence of the community through hypocritical pre lenses. They must practice what they preach. Talk is cheap. Actions are louder than words. Tbe well-to-do rich people of Chi cago who have exploited tbe commun ity for all it is worth during the Inst twenty five years have much to answer for. They bave set tbe example for lawlessness, of disregard for tbe wel fare of their fellow-citizens, and of callous indifference to righteous pub- lie opinion. If some men of less wealth sud inferior social standing and influence shall “better tbetr px ample," those who took tbe first step io tbe direction of abusing public con fidence and trespassing on private rights ne*d not complain.—Chicago Tribune.
