Balloting fa Yof Leo’e successor will cotumenc» tomorrow, at Rome. What has become of Major Ktouey and his railroad. Ha aaema to be a back number.____________ Th» “Fake gedieine Show” that exhibited here some two weeks ago, went to pteoea at Myrtl» Point, and th« ipember» separated. There ia no such firm in Portland artbey claimed to represent,_________ The Portland Journal is making liberal offers in order to extend their Publications sod persons wishing a good reliable newspaper during th» next year should take advantage of their offer. Tlw Daily can be had for 92.50. the Semi-Weekly for 75, and tb» Weekly Journal for SO cents a year. This offer ia for one day only pamely i August 27, 1908. See tbe Journal’s poster at this office or at poetoffice. From a resident of Roseburg, with whom we had a conversation this week, we learned that the Southern Pacific railroad company bas been shipping material »nd implements for railruad construction to Drain and it ia supposed that that company is looking toward tbe construction of a road to tbo coast from Drain, arid that it will prubably be extended alpng the coast to hc-ad off other ootp- psnies which seem to be pointed this way. There is an ituuieose railroad traffic to be built up soon along the coast, and tbe S. P. must either se cure this trade or its line through ceutxai Oregon will become a losing investment, when some other com pany builds a coast road, so it begins to look as if something will be. dune. One of the thing« needed very much in the Bandon School is first clans seats for the higher room and a few extra ouoh to finish out the interme diate department and the director» should devise ways aud means to properly seat the bone«. We do not think it necessary to levy a tax as there are other and better wayt to ac- oowplisb this result. By the addi tion of the 9th and 10th grades there are quite a number ol boys and girls who will receive an immediate benefit, and it is proposed that these bright young minds take the matter in baud and get up an entertainment and take lb« proceeds and aeat the school rooms. If a first effort fails to bring jq tfie required amount, Jet a second one be mad». A snake show or a Det ent tpedicjpe fiend can carry enough money oot of town to furnish a whole schoolhouse aud we think that a proper effort will fill thia long fell want. Wa wonder if th» directors went to the “Snake Show.” Coast Mail: Bandon’s new opera lions» is highly spoken of by the Jtfargarita Fiscbar Co., as an up-to- date little play honae. with every thing clean and well arranged, and lsckipg only electric lights, with which th» pity by th» spa has not yet beep supplied. Review: About three o’clock p. as. Saturday Dre. Hoover and Honek, with Dr. F. W- Haynes to handle tb» aneatbetica, began the work of ampn- Hting th» leg of Heory Martindale, pf Camas Valley, which was eerionaly injured by the accidental discharge of a revolver a week ago. Tbo injury interfered with the proper circulation of th» blood, rendering amputation necessary just above the knee joint, as gangreqo had appeared io the foot and lower part of the limb. The operation was successfully completed and the patient revived in good con dition . ....— A Baavar Hill Haw. »hot For a Deer Cholera Infantum, Dr. A. Cooper, ot Cbetoo, waa shot Joly lBtb, while booting near hie home north of Cbetcu. The following account ia from the Corry Coonty Re corder: “On tbe evening of Joly 18tb, Dr. Cooper and two young friends, Harry lnglsr and Herbert Watkinaon, went out bnntiog. Cooper knowing tbe country better than tbe boys placed Herbert Watkioson on one side of a gulch and sent Harry Ingler around tbe bead of tbe gulch and told him to stop off the flrot ridge, and be would go down and scare the deer out Io a few minutes after parting from Cooper, Harry Ingler saw a deer come out of th" gulch on tba side where be was but on tbe opposite aide from where be bad parted from Coop er a few minutes before. He fired at the deer bnt missed it and the deer went out of sight into tbe high brush and fero, but be kept watching for it to come in eight again. Presently be ■aw tbe brush begin to »bake and soon saw a white spot tn tbe brnsb which be thoagbt waa a deer’s tail. He shot at jt and then Cooper »hooted to him that bo was »hot. On going down to Copper be found him to be abut io tbe left breast about 2 inebea below the heart, and tbe bullet bad gone out under the right arm. Dr. Crawfla was sent for and every thing possible done to eave him but be died the next day, Joly 19tb, about 8.00 p. m." Dr. Cooper told bia friends that he himself, was to blame as he did not come ont where he bad said he would. Ao inquest exhonorated Ingler from blame. Fair Tbe State Board of Agriculture are making a number of needed improve ments at tbe state fair grounds this year. A new water system custiug »5000 is being put in which will add much comfort to the exhibitors and campers. More new stalls are being built to better accommodate tbe large number of exhibitors that are pre paring to coms to tbe fair. A large am pitheater is being built, where visitors can be seated and witness tbe livestock judging under cover. Many minor improvements are being made on tbe grounds, and everything is being dune to make a visit to the fair a pleasant event and a joy forever. ▲ Hysteriou» Case. A young woman was standing on a wide, smooth pavement alone iu front of a church in Denver, waiting tor a car, no other person being an bin 200 feet of her, when suddeuly, and from no ascertained cause, ber tbiu skirts caught fire, and before any one could reach tbe spot to aid her she was fa tally burned. No cigar or cigarette stump lay near, no wandering electric spark, electricians say, could have caused th» conflagration; no noise of an igniting match was beard uor was any partly burned mstob found, aud it seems incredible that a spark could have been struck from tbe pavement by her shoe as she perhaps moved slightly. But this is not all of the strange case, for the night before thie young woman, who was visiting friends io Denver, bad so strong a presentiment of some sudden end strange catastrophe impending for her destruction that »be could not sleep, bnt was restless with scuts dis tress, all night. Tbe cause of tbe fire must have been natural, yet cannot be explained, and even more mysteri oua, to th» average mind, ie tbeeooroe and eaoae of tbe message that ton- warned ber of ber fate. Verily, there are more things in heaven and earth than onr ordinary philosophise ex plaio or understandiogly account for. —Telegram. •lOO Rewar«, »1<M>.
