THE RECORDER KVKRY THIHÄDAY AFTERMOON . BT ... DAVI» F. MTITT EDITOR AMD PROPRIETOR. SUBSCRIPTION RATES. On. Year......... Six Month.... 'fhrMMuutba. t «2 00 . 1 00 W This paper is entered at the Bandon post office as Second-class Matter. THURSDAY. FED. 5. 1903. ED1TOH1AL. One of the ludicrous things of the times is to bear a man descanting up on tbe evils of iociali*m aud tbe de lueion of its advocates, when Lis whole tirade evidences the fact that be does not know what he is talking about. Hon. Binger Hermann has stopped down «nd out of tbe Commissioner’s office, bnt he is not inclined to re. main without official honors, so he is aspiring to iiis old position, aud will make n fight for Congressman from tbe First Oregon District. Marshfield has an ordinance pro hibiting tbe use of airgnue within tbe incorporation, and judging from tbe darnngx done to windows, and lhe cruelty that has come to our notice through tho Ufe of them, there should Jt»e an ordinance against airguns in Bandon. The broken wiudow panes sre a standing advertisement of mean ness. Tbe County Court levied a tax of 30 mill«, this year, to pay the expenses of State and County expenditures Thia exceeds tbe levy made when it became necessary to build a court house. At that time.it was thought that lhe extra rise would only last for a year or two but it seems otherwise, and it grows constantly larger, nnd it is safe to predict that there will be a big kick made before many more years pass unless there ia a lowering of tbe tax rate. Vug Eat Vug Policy. The Demócrata of the Colorado Legislature have finally mustered a majority, 61 out of 100 members, and re elected Senator Teller. His elec tion will bo contested, end it is im probable that tbe Republican majority in tbe Senate will allow bim to take his seat. Which party has been moat wrong and anarchical in tbe contest eaunot be poaaitively stated, tboogb it seems tbe Democrats have, equit ably, Uie l>est of the contest. Un tbe face of tbe returns they bad a major ity of 10 on joint ballot. Tbe He publicans, having a majority of one m the house, proceeded, at tbe insti gation of ex-Seuatur Walcott, to un seat enough Democrats to give tbe Republicans a majority on joint bal lot. They charged gross frauds in Denver, where a solid Democratic delegation was elected. Tbe charges were no doubt iu large part true. Tbe other bouse then unseated enough Republicans to give tbe Democrats a majority again, and a bare majority of tbe Legislature. They also made charges of groes frauda at tbe polls on the part of tbe Republicans, which charges are also undoubtedly true. After several days' strenuous efforts, tbe 51 were Brought together in joint convention and Teller was elected. The state officers are Republicans, and may not recognize this action of ficially. Since it seems to be con ceded that both parties were guilty of tbe rankest kind of frauds, it would orfTy be a just penalty on a state that permits such political criuiea to leave it with only one Sen ator until it can bold an honest elec tion and elect another Senator with out resorting to anarchy,—Portland Telegram. ——OQO------- lu<h‘ Nam Won't be Bluffed W ashington , Jan. 29.—The Ven ezuelan situation, especially the at titude of Germnny, was discussed by tbe Senate committee on odllitary affairs today, and the situation infl;i enced tbe committee oo some matters pertaining to the Army appropriation bill, among which was tbe decision to accept tbe House provision relating to transports—that they be retained in t he service. Tbe committee also provided for an increase of electricians, skilled gunners, machinists and others who take care of and handle guns in tbe seacoast defences.. Some other ad ditions were made in tbe bill with a view of improving the servico. Tbe discussion was general and earnest, and tbe conclusions reached were that tbe United States make it plain that tbe boner and dignity of tbe country would be maintained- and lhat Germany should not be h I- lowed to “bluff” the Government by any attitude she inigtit assume.
