Pursuing a little farther tbe sug gestion made a few days ago in these columns that consumers should in «onio manner combine to insist on reasonable prices and to resist tbe ex actions of protracted trusts or com binations, it is to be observed that ponsumers in this country are not nearly so wide-awake to their inter ests as those of Great Britain are. 'J.’bero tbe great rival and corrective of the trust is co operative trading, tbe voluntary co operation of con sumers. There are now over 1500 re tail co operative societies in Great Britain, Their sales last year ex ceeded $250,000,000, and they divided upwards of $40,000,000 in profits. Some of these societies have but one Store; some have several stores. Some business “Napoleons” like Sir Thomas Lipton have tried to crowd out these po-operative stores, but so far with out success. And it is asserted that co-operative trading has gained a position in Great Britain from which it can neither be shaken by individual competition nor by tbe “trusts,” as yve understand that term. There are various forms or phases of co operation; the great department store came into existence partly in consequence of this demand for nec- PHSaires of all kinds at reasonable prices. Labor unions are themselves but a species of co-operation. But what will check tbe greed of the “trusts” and bring them to reasonable terms, more than anything else, is stores, factories and mills that are practically owned by tbe consumers; that get their raw materials or mann faetuted goods at wholesale cost, and sell at a smalt profit. Iu this country, as yet, individual ism is too strong, apparently, to ad mit of tbe sucessful working of such combinatipps of consumers, but the trend is in that direction, and we are likely yet. to see this form of applied socialism carried out to a groator or less extent It seems that it will be necessary, to cheek the inordinate greed of such concerns as the steel trust, the salt trust, the biscuit trust, and a thousand others. —ooo----- Hotter Tlrttii a Planter. Tbe large vote-cast by tbe Socialist party,in tbe late elections ought to bo a “pointer” anti a warning. Tbe Republican party was indorsed, as President Roosevelt said, merely to see if it would "make good“—and also because t.be Democratic party is both disrupted and disreputable. But millions of men who voted for Repub« lican candidates are not overly in love with that party either. And many thousands silently voted tbe Socialist ticket. In Ohio tbe Socialist candi date for Secretary of State received over 14,000 votes; in Massachusetts tbe Socialist candidate for Governor received 33,000 votes- and votes in other states were almost equally sig nitieant. This Socialist vote is likely to grow into great proportioDsJ if not into a majority, witbin a few years. Mr. Chase, tbe Socialist candidate for Governor of Maaeacbusette, in ex- planation of the vote he received said: development has “Industrial reached that stage where tbe people of this Nation are completely in the power of a few gigantic combinations, whose power comes to them by virtue of tbe ownership of industry. Tbe 33,000 votes I secured came largely from tbe ranks of organized labor as a distinct demand for the abolition of tbe present system of industrial serv ¡tilde. Both tbe Democratic and Re publican parties stand for capitalism, with its high prices, low wages, lack of employment and strikes for living wages; its syndicates, corporations and trusts, which control our in dustrial life. I stood for tbe collective ownership of tbe trusts aod all other industry and for au organized indus try scientifically conducted and dem ocratically operated. Massachusetts baa spoken in tones that the Nation must heed, for tbe social revolution. Tbirty-three thousand Massachusetts voters have this year demanded the overthrow of tbe mun«killing, child murdering, soul-destroying system of capitalism, and for tbe inauguration of tbe next inevitable system of in dustry—the ownership and operation of tbe means of life by all. in the in terest of al), and not for the enrich ment of the few and the destitution of tbe many.” ----- OOO----- The Oregon Weekly Journal, a Demo cratic newspaper, 16 pages, full of news— all of it! $1 a year to any address.
