For sale by C. Y. Lowe. A b Old Story Repeated. This paper is entered at the Bandon post From the Evening Telegram. offioe as Seoond-olass Matter. According to a story from Pittsburg, THURSDAY. OCT. 9, 1902. EDITORIAL. At Stoctoa, last week, parties went looking after a gas leak with a candle. They found the leak and it will be remembered that Stockton had a five hundred thousand dollar fire. A gas leak is easily discovered with match or lighted candle. Minneapolis is one ahead. It chased its Mayor out of the state but con tinued to pay his salary. It probably found it cheaper to maintain him abroad than at home. If St. Louis bad hired its whole council to go abroad some time ago, it might have profited by their absence, and saved the cost of prosecution for bribery. What the Strikes Teach. John Brialin, 75 years old und totally blind, has secured judgment against the Carnegie Steel Company on ac count of a pateut that he and another workman invented, aud that the Carnegie Company appropriated. Through over-confidence in their em ployers, or Deglect sufficiently to pro tect their own interests, the workmen found themselves, as inventors so often are—though not so often now as formerly—“euchred out of their invention aud the profits justly due them therefrom. About fife years ago Brislin brought a suit for in- fringruent of pBtent, and has finally won it iu the District Court, bis part ner having in the meantime died. Hia attorneys say that if the court’s decision is sustained by the Appel late Court, Brislin will be entitled to not less than $5,000,000 in royalties that the company has wrongfully ap propriated. The old man naturally was greatly rejoiced when be beard of the decision. He worked at his trade for 40 years, begtnniug when a boy, at 12 cents a day, aud dually earning $11 a day. Then he begau demanding his rights regarding his invention, and has expended every thing he bad tn the five years’ litiga tion. He is three score aud fifteen years old, blind, aud practically a pauper, aud yet the court says ibis great company has robbed him of rights of a probable inouey value of $5,000.000. The story is told here as it comes from a Pittsburg dispatch to a New York paper. If true what a com mentary it fnruishes on Mr. Caruegie’s and Mr. Morgau’s great deeds of charity. They can give millions to colleges and to found libraries, yet they tight this poor, blind old mao for five years iu the courts to preveut him from securing bis right, and after having made $5,000,000 out of his in vention, the work of his brain and baud, would let him starve to death. The great strike in the Pennsyl vania coal fields continues, and as time draws on, its far reaching influ ence begins to take offset with a touch that threatens dire consequences to the Public. The baleful influence of a scarcity of fuol, caused by the contention be tween employers and employes has long since reached beyond the parties immediately interested, and has made itself felt in retarding business. Now thst winter is coming on, making it absolutely necessary that the public shall have the necessary fuel by which to keep warm, its influence in creases and the effect becomes .more threatening in appearance. The price of coal has risen, in New York and other Eastern cities to $21 a ton, a price that cannot be paid by the poorer classes, even if an abund ance could be had nt that figure. This puts fuel out of the reach of the poor and that means that they must suffer cold, perhaps hunger, endure priva tions and exposure; this entailB suf fering, brings disease, and death is the result. When the result has Card of Thank«. reached this stuge. somebody is guilty We desire, through the R ecoriieu , of murder ill having caused prema to make known to the people of Bau- litre death. A bo is responsible? These strikes teach many lessons to doti, as lar as words can express our humanity. One tiling taught is that I profound gratitude for the liberal aid the welfare of a large number of peo so kindly extended to our afflicted pie should uot be left to the care and daughter. Very Gratefully, P. M c G ourty . keeping of a man or corporation M rs . A. M c G ourty . whose sole interest in such persons is summed up in the result of grinding all the profit out of their labor thut can be had. Another lesson to be learned from strikes is, that public safety, and that of individuals, wil) uot be served as loug as these great corporations are permitted to hold the resources which nature has supplied, and use them for private purposes, when they were designed for the beuefit of all. Look back through a period of forty years, and see what Lae been the result of business under the present system. It has been failures, strikes, stringency of money, hard times, no work, starvation and all the attendant curses of a blind, contentions, greedy system, wherein conditions grow worse continually instead of better, aud we are promised nothing better until the accumulations of these trusts pile np and topple over bring ing world wide disaster in the ruin that must follow, From whence comes the right, of corporations and trusts, to acquire the resources of »country, or of the world, and use them to the disadvantage of the citizens of that country or of the world; to withhold the means of sub sistence and force men and women, through the pangs of hunger or the discomforts of cold, to do their will and heap wealth into their coffers at the expense of toil, virtue, manhood, intelligence, life itself and nil that a wan or woman should hold dear. Justice must sit, sooner or later, and it is time to quit obasing pban toms. The present trend is evil;peace and prosperity cannot spring out of contention i all the people must own all the resources and nil the means of productiun and distribution before justice can spread her peaceful wings over the nation and give repose to the people.
