He will doubtless discover, inside the next three years that the Wall street bear is the most presistent fighter and dangerous specie of the whole bear family. From various sources comes the in formation that old line Democrats aro rejoicing in the hope that if the party can eliminate Bryaniem from it, the chances will be correspondingly bright for success in the next nation al campaign. Thia may be so, but the difference in the two parties is already bard of discernment, and if Bryanism is ejected the campaign will simmer down to a scramble for office, in which case there will be but little difference who wins. Now it is the Beef Trust that is go ing to save thousands of dollars by lettiDg out many of the smaller houses but it is not likely that beef will be any cheaper to the consumer. This means another displacement of labor; another hustling of men to find occupations l>y which they can gain a living. Every time a merging of interests occurs|to save pt ..lite to the stockholders it means the displace ment of labor. It is true that great gains can thus be saved to the opera tors, but it is just as dear that these methods displace laborers without, creating a demand f >r labor. It is th<* business of combinations by com bining to decrease the demand for labor, Socialism is the only plan of merging whereby the inter«sU of the whole human family are taken into cousideiTdiou. Appeal to Reason: Questioned as to why she became a Socialist, Annie Besaut, the famous novelist, said: “The cry of starving children, the sobs of women poisoned in the lead works, driven to prostitution by starv ation, made old and haggard by ceaseless work, the result of an evil system inseparable from private own ership of the instruments of wealth production, has made me a Socialist.“ John W.
