The merging of business interests into large concerns goes merrily on. ’Just nbw it causes little apprehension as the average business rniud either fails to Comprehend the import or else is too busily engaged to take note of the trend of affairs. However, un der present conditions it is doubtful if it can be prevented, and when it becomes evident to the great majority that their interests are identical there will be a merging of interests that will bring about a remedy which will be found ody in Socialism. There is no chain that will bind a person tighter, nor hold them in ig norance longer than prejudice, and this is true in whatever sense it takes hold of the human mind. Prejudice will keep a person from tastiog food that is both clean and wholesome; it will debar acquaintance where mutual benefit and pleasure would result; it Will prevent investigation where the mind by searching would be led into invaluable knowledge; it will lead its Vidtim to believe that he or she is reflecting the character of the Saviour of men, when in fact they are dis playing a soul so narrow and con ternptible that it shrivels itself up and refuses to he |erj into the truth for fear of being contaminated. The broad minded person whose opinion is worth considering is an investiga tor. The narrow minded person with the mentally starved looking face is a coward; is afraid to investigate for fear of having to believe something that he or she does not want to accept as truth. Io all things be men and <vomen. Search and accept that which is true; cast off tho false; add to your knowledge and throw oil your igno- rauce. Grid designed that man should use Lin’ reason mg faculties and be anchored on truth; that he should know upon what foundation be stood nud that ho should not bo tossed flitter and yon by false doctrines. The contracting parties this time are Dr. A. W. Kime and Mrs. Kate Rohner. They were married Satur day evening. Elder C. E. Crumley adici.iting, the ceremony taking place at Mr. Crumley’s place of residence’ The affair was on the quiet order but some ladies who saw the couple repairing to the Elder's house sus pected that a wedding bad taken place and the secret was soon out. 1 The baud called upoD the bride and groom Sunday evening and after rendering some choice music were greeted by the happy Cor.ple and generously treated to refreshments. The R ecorder joins the friends of the bride and groom in congratula tions and good wishes for future prosperity, •- Danger iu Jnuiuirn Ginger W. C. T. U. COLUMN. From the Oregonian. The next \V C T U meeting takes place Tuesday, at 2:30, P. M , in the Methodist Church. Temperance people were startled h few years ago by statemeuU, suppli- meuted by stalistica, showing the growing prevalence of the ’’Jamaica giuger habit” among citizens, includ ing many women, of several Eastern cities. Now comes the statement that from the use of wood alcohol in com pounding Jamaica giuger a large number of persons who had fallen io to the giuger habit have become blind. To substantiate thia charge, suit has been entered against a Baltimore firm of manufacturing druggists and chemists for damages aggregating a large sum by persons who have be come blind following the use of Ja maica ginger. It is a fact beyond dispute and well known to medical men that wood alcohol, when intro duced into the human system causes blindness. The consumption of this deadly distillation by manufacturing chemists throughout the country has increased enormously within the past ten years and as blindness has in creased to an astonishing degree in many local-option towns of l’ennsyl vania, the Virginias and Maryland, in wuich, for obvious reasons, the Jamaica ginger habit prevails ex tensively, the presumption is strong that wood alcohol has been introduced into the system of these people through the use of Jamaica ginger. A word to the wise is considered sufficient, but as people who become victims of the drug habit are not wise, leading oculists of the East nre sounding a note of warning against “bottled blindness” that is being sent broadoast over the country under tho name of essences, of which wood al cohol is the base, and to which men having the liquor appetite are woht to resort when for any reason liquors ordinarily consumed oh beverages cannot readily be procured. The alarm in regard to this matter cannot be too strongly sounded, since of all the physical evils that may overtake mankind, blindness is the most dreaded and deplored. —ooo---- Telegrami The net profits of the Steel Trust for the quarter ending June 30, were about $40,000,000. as against $26,000,000 for the cor re spoLding period last year. Which is sufficient proof that some people, at least those who. by legislation and other means, have acquired a “cinch,” are quite prosperous. But the miners who earn $300 a year have a different story to tel). Appeal to Reason; Au agent of the beef trust refused to testify before the federal grand jury at New Orleans, “because it would incriminate them selves”,and they were discharged and the case dropped! Did you ever find a law that would operate against the trusts? What a farce the law has be come. It wprks day and night against the working people—but does not touch the kiugs. The kings can do no wrong. It matters not to you bow many peo ple own the stock trust—you have a monopoly against you. The addition of more stockholders does not alter the relatiou to you of the industry. If every other citizen in the nation owned tho sources of supply and dis tribution of sugar or salt, and yon owned none, it would be just as bad for you. There would be a monopoly against you. Only your owning an equal interest with ALL the others would place you on an equality and would destroy any evil effect of that monopoly ou you.— Ex. The Same Old Story. J. A. Kelly relates an experience similiar to that which bus happened in almost every neighborhood in the United States and has been told and re told by thousands of others. He says: "Last summer I had an attack of dysentery and purchased a bottle of Chamberlaiu’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy, which I used ac cording Io directions and with entirely satisfactory results. The trouble was controlled much quicker than former attacks when I used other remedies.” Mr. Kelly is a well known citizeu of A Wonderful Cow. Henderson, N. C For sale by C. Y.
