L ondon , June 5.—The negotiations L THURSDAY, JURE 12, 1902. The Supreme court of New York ¡8 reported to have bit the meat trust h bard blow. Well, it in truly grati fying that these barometers of justice are beginning to discover where an- areby really exists. If ybu would enjoy the fullness of life you must grow in knowledge and profit by that which you learn. It is not enough that you search after truth, but that you bacoyae a doer of what you fibd to be true. If you follow u wrong rule of ac- tion, the farther you pursue it, the greater will be the injury you receive from such pursuit, while on tbe other band, the closer you observe a cor rect principle and follow its lead, tbe greater will you be rewarded for your labor. Some of Oregou's prominent jour nuls are up in arms to show that the state is not doubtful to the Republi can. ranks. These efforts remind us of former occasions when these same journals were chuffing I bo Democrats about trying to gather consolation out of defeat. The same spirit dom inates either parly in this Respect. The agitator has been a most ob noxious personage in the eyes of many poople. It is too bad, but if he hail been more generally listened to and appreciated, it might not now be necessary (o call < n the govern meDt to step in and stay the band of such men as J. Pierpont Morgan and the combinations lie is bringing about Senator Hanna has been doing val iant service during the last few days in tbe interests of his constituents— the trusts—by working in favor of tbe Panama canal route. Yon often hear people remark that they bate an ngiiator. Well, when «ve come to think it over there is nothing strange iibout it. The bad cbiifHCter hales a good ono because of the disparity shown in the looking glass of life Hie devil bates a chris tian, and as a naturili consequence, persons who are too slothful in their mental faculties to seek out and stand up for their own rights anil liberties are not likely to appreciate those qualities in others which are dormant in themselves. Especially is this true when their own conduct jn ],fH compares to disadvantage with the wide>ftwuV«>, honest, progressive agi tator who is always found in the front ranks doing byltle for bis fellow man. It is too late. There is no use now to try to stem the avalanche which Morgan and bis business associates have started. Tbe rush is already on; concentration will continue and be come more fapicl; government is be itig already importuned to check tbo advance and bolster up tho tottering old hulk—the competitive system. Men may cry. “help! help!" but there is no help, neither peace outside per fect social conditions—The govern meut must either own the trusts or the trusts will own and operate tbe gov«rnmetit. Which shall it be? Do yon prefer to be a free man and to have <>qual oporlunity, or do yon wish to bs driven by circumstances, brought about by a few men who will own the earth and hold their tenants ia practical slavery ? of the British and tbe Canadian Gov eminent and some of the other Col ouial Governments with tbe Cunard Line and other lines comprising what is dow termed the Liverpool syndi cate, which is opposing tbe Morgan shipping combine, contemplate, ac cording to tbe \\ esfmitister Gazette, both a fast service of mail aud pas senger steamers, in conjunction with the Canadian Pacific Railroad, aud a Heft of fast freight steamers. Tbe mail steamers which it is proposed to build will be of enormous size, capable of steaming 25 knots an hour, ami will be fully equipped for use as armed crosiers, carrying eight quick tiring six inch guns, forward and aft and broadsides of t hree 4.7-incb guns. The freight steamers will be 16 knot vessels, carrying 6090 to 7000 tous dead weight. Tbe Westminster Ga zette thinks it probable that Milford Haven will be the port of departure of the fleet. The scheme contemplate^ a line of steamers running to China, Japan and Australia, from Vancouver, B. C. Canada and Australia are ex pected to join in paying the subsidies. A draft of tbe scheme involves the home government guaranteeing a small interest on tbe capital involved. This will have to be ratified by the House of Commons, ''where," says I be Westminster Gazette, "it will probably be met with opposition." L ondon , June 5.—According to the Shipping Gazette, J. P. Morgan is not concerned in any way iu the pro- posd Cunard scheme, which t|ie same authority understands will be an "all British".project. The Gazette says: “The Cunard line, having finally determined not to enter tbe Morgan combin«-, deems the time opportune for tbe creation of a fast Atlautic aer- vice, which shall be entirely British owned, aud is now taking steps to ascertain from the government bow far the active interest which tlie Min isters recently expressed in the wel fare of the British meichantile marine is likely to assume a concrete shape." L ondon , June 6.—According to tbe Daily Mai), the American Line will not join the British shipping com biuation, bill will remain an active competitor on tbe outside. Loudon shipping circles are skeptical as to the success of tbe Canadian service, unless it receives heavy subsidies. It is believed that such a line could only hope to pay by attracting American '•■•.rtf-, and that this would only lie possible by runuii,K u . m newest and and b«st boats on the Atlantic, cost mg £1,000,000 apiece and managed on the most sumtuoUH scale. Iu an editorial the Daily Mai) exhorts the government to adopt measures to protect and encourage British ship plug, instead, as has hitherto been the case, of rather striving to hamper tbe industry by the application of restrictions which were Dot enforced upon alien shipping. Tbe Daily News, in its financial article this morning, says it is believed that the bulk of the shares of tbe Cunard Company is now in American hands.
