THE RECORDER IB PCDLIHBXD »ÜVEK.V THl'ltSDAY AFTERNOON .... BY .... DAVI» K. STITT, SDITOH AND FKOriUETOB. SUBSCBIPTION KATES. One Tear........................................ >2 00 Six Months................................................. 1 tw) Three Months.............................................. 60 Thia prpor is entered at the Bandon post ottioe as Second-olass Matter. THURSDAY, FEB. 13, 1303. EDITORIAL. The sentimont of Socialists in this section of the county appears to favor a ticket that will cover the state, con gressional and legislative offices, but not the county offices. This view is in keeping with the fact that so far as material benefit can secure to the populaco, Socialists can accom plish nothing until they can capture the legislative and executive offices. Under preBent laws Socialists could do no more than give economical ad ministration if they filled all the offi ces, and but little could bo accom plished until legislation can be had. Andrew Carnegie has been a sue cess as a financier and holds a good opiuion of himself. In an address at New York, a few days ago, among other things he said that he thought a fitting epitaph for himself would be: “Here lies a man who knew how to got around men much cleverer than himself.” This flattering opinion of bis own ability very probably is the incentive |o bis gifts to charitable in stitutions. His proposed epitaph, as a telescope to bis purposes, suggests that he might be found trying to bribe, or buy, his way into heaven to evade justice. Another old side tracked Isthmian canal route has been fished out of the rubbish by Senator Scott, of West Virginia, who is extolling its superior ity, which it does not possess, over other routes, Only a short time ago the press of public opinion centered on the Nicaragua canal to an extent which indicated that congress might take favorable action, but tile re sources of the railroad octopus to delay had not been exhausted, and obstructionists are in the field in full force. There will be an Isthmian canal built when the people take the reins of government in their own bauds and bid capitalists stand aside. ,d7w Are The AnareliisM A11 Dir«!» Fear Mirrors. Trust's Ph uonienul Figures “I learned n trick while in the Phil ippines in the matter of keeping birds out of fruit trees," volunteered a well known official of the postoffieo de partment to a Star reporter. “It is simple, inexpensive and, as far as 1 could observe, practical. It consists in hanging a small mirror on the top limbs of the tree. Tbeio should be at least six inches of string to the mirror, so that it can swing about as it is blown by tbo wind. The flush of the mirror, it appears, scares tho birds away. One or two 5 cent mir rors hnng on a tr.'o is sufficient, though, of course, three or four would be that much better, I was told that this method bad worked in the Phil ippines successfully for many years and that the birds do not grow famil iar with it as they do with a scare crow. Since my return here T find that the mirror scaro is not unknown hero and that it has been in use by Michigan fruit growers for many years. I have tried it myself in a small way and it is amusing what a stir it creates among tbo birds.“— Washington Star. ----- OOO---- - Appeal to Reason: Socialist Rep resentative McCartney, of Massachu setts, has introduced a bill into the legislature of that state, requiring manufacturers to give their employes time on election days to vote. The Lowell Daily Sun, commenting on the proposed measure, says: “The pur pose of the measure is good, and if it were enacted it would remove a serious abuse under which laborers in many factories have suffered for years. We have had instances in the Lowel mills wherein no political worker would bo allowed inside the gates unless he wore the badge of the republican city committee. In one mill tho voter who was not sought by such bnged messenger found it very hard to get out al all. Besides the same factory permitted the distribu tion of republican circulars to the em ployes, but forbade the distribution of circulars by any other party. Such methods of electioneering have not been uncommon in factories in this city and elsewhere, and the fact that they exist proves the need of some such law as that proposed.” ----- OQO------ J. I*. N ew Y ohk .—-Some remarkable things ale made public in the report of th« billion-dollar steel trust. Among them are the earnings of the company, its surplus and the price paid for launching the corporation. J. P. The corpora tion’s surplus on the day the balance was struck was 8174.344,298. and the dividends paid it the aame time ng- gregatod 841,980,706.
