Nearly $2,(XX),(XX) in dividends was paid out last year by the whiskey trust. This sum more than doubled the dividet.de of the proceeding year. This trust trusts in whiskey but not for whiskey. The Oregonian is doing some good reform work aDd is hitting sledge hammer blows at government abuses, but it is useless to think that reform will come under present arangement and conditions. Peace begins when strife ceases, and competition for the necessities and conveniences of life is not the dove that will usher in the millennium. Third Assistant Postmaster Gen eral Madden has given up his fight to exclude tbe Appeal to Reason from tbe mails at the pound rate, and that journal and its army of workers will make Madden the present of a gold watch in recognition of the advertise ment he has given Socialism. Mad den is now advertising W. J. Bryan’s journal by denying hitn the right to send copies of it to congressmen un less they subscribe for it. Madden seems to exerciso censorship over wbat congressmen read. Senator Spooner, of Wisconsin is 'said to be an able man, but in the past as well as in the present, be has been a corporation lawyer, hence it is said of the bill bo has introduced in Congress that its purpose is to delay and finally defeat tbe construction of an isthmian canal. Tbe congressional body was instituted to represent tbe people and in that representation to carry out their will and labor id their interests, but instead it is constituted a body to represent and carry out the wishes of tbe wealthy corporations, whose hirelings many congressional members prove themselves to be by their strenuous and doubtful efforts niude in trying to serve their masters. The American Economist, a publi cation of New York, which hangs out a headlight purporting to bo in the in terest of Amercan labor and industry,is making a vigorous fight against tariff revision, and also against reciprocity, except in such articles as this country does not produce, or on which there ean be no reason or sense in applying a tariff schedule. Tbo Economist is run in the interest of protected in dustries, aud lets its light shine out from a mountain of wealthy eminence. From its obsevation it speaks truths that apply io great business concerns which have reached enormous pro portions, and which are unbalancing tbe business structure, but they do not apply to tbe general welfare of tbe body of business and labor. Tbe stand such protectionists take is that of greed, which neither looks to nor cares for equity. Peace on earth will not reign so loug as the incentive to action is dominated by that monster, greed, and labor will never receive its due uuiler usury. God Give Us Me A Fa it li fu I ltcpublican Paper Décrira Again«* the Majority I.cud in Congreaa. From tbe Chicago Inter Ooean [Rep.]. Looking at tbe situation as it is in Washington today, thoughtful Amer icans see tbe House attempting to discriminate, against cur Filipino wards as we never discriminated against them when they were utterly foreign to us. They see Cuba, whose bonds to Spain wo disolved, menaced with complete commercial separation from us, and with a commercial isolation which even the Madrid Government did not impose upon her. They see the aspirations of the American peo ple for an isthmiau canal that will at the same time facilitate their com merce and strengthen their National defense, juggled, paltered with, and tossed about as if it were the merest trifle of the day. And all this they have seen done at the behest of three or four special in terests whose part in the Nation is but a tiny fraction of tbe whole, Ou the other band, what do the people see as tbe only constructive piece of legislation likely to be ac complished by this Congress? The ship subsidy bill—a measure desigued and promoted chiefly to take tbe peo ple’s money and put it in tbe pockets of special interests which are well able to take care of themselves and to add to the profits of the two most power ful industrial combinations of the age. This is the record of tbe majority— the Republican majority in tbe 57th Congress up to the present. This is the record which if not speedily alterod, the Republican party must carry into the Congressional elections a few months hence, and which Presi dent Roosevelt and bis party must defend, if they can, in tbe general election two years hence.“ “God give us men,“ prayed a great American poet in a dark hour of the Nation’s life. Tbe Republican party and tbe Nation, as they contemplate the record now making by the 57th CoDgress, may well reecho that prayer. Mr. Wheeler Got Rid of His Rheumatism. ‘•During the winter of 1898 I was so lame in my joints, in fact all over my body, that I could hardly bobble around, when I bought a bottle of Chamberlain's Pain Balm. From the first application I began to get well, and was cured and have worked steadily nil tbo year.—R. W heeler , Northwood, N. Y. For sale b,y C. Y Lowe. OO Wirch mm Expansion From tbo OreRoniRD. When Marconi first announced bo had signaled across the Atlantic, scoffers raised their voices on every side. But now they know better. Everybody realizes that Marconi btiB made one of the grandest discoveries of the age. Nothing electrifies the imagination more than wireless telegraphy. The phenomenon of tlionght daiting across the ethereal waves of space puts us into wireless connection with fairyland. But as tbo fairy laud of yesterday is the actual land of today, so may tbe dreamland of tomorrow be tbe actual land of the day after. Tbe electric signal has sprung across an ocean 2000 miles wide. And this distance is but a band-breadth for tbe electric impulse. A kite on one side of a great ocean, a high pole on tbe other, thought darting between--tiere we have the suggestion of an entire re creation of terrestrial means of communication. No part of the earth’s surface is so sequestered that the electric impulse will not find it through the wireless medium. Cathay was once as far away as Mars. May not wireless teleg raphy bring it as close as our neigh bors behind tbe next bill? -----DOO----- Telegram: W ith tho exception of Great Britain, the United States ship yards are turning out more ships than those of any other country. Why should there be a ship subsidy law. —ooo---- A Young Financier DO YOU NEED ANY HARD-WARE? MARKE! “There is a small cross eyed boy THOMAS ANDERSON, Prop.
