The Philippine ports are held to be subject to United States coastwise laws, and yet the constitution does not follow the flag. Selfishness is very conspicuous in an individual whose desire is to pos sesB everything in sight to the ex clusion of the interests and rights of all other people. And now comes the news that the projectors of the Ship Subsidy Scheme have abandoned their pet for the present, the opposition having become so strong that it is hopeless to fur ther push the project. This is good news so far as it reaches, but it need be no surprise to the public if the slimy coils of the serpent is seen reaching out again in a more subtle manner once tfie public mind is lulled to rest. Possibly the change in ad ministration may have something to do with the repose of this scheme to fleece the common public. The Qreqonian of the 4th inst., gave a fine account of the floating of the bark Baroda, but unfortunately the scoW which was reported to have been used as a fulcrum was at that time piled up high and dry on the beach and the bark still rests in her sandy bed having only been turned head on to the sea. The Oregonian is charging up idol atry in connection with tariff. It is doubtless true that the Israelites worshipped the golden calf as their descendents have a strong leaning that way yet, but it is equally sug gestive that there are idolators today, and not a few of them, who are as strongly iucliued to the Tariff Pro tection Calf, and why not’ It has brought into some of their coffers more gold than would make a whole herd like Aaron’s calf However, this Tariff calf is not impartial. It does not serve all its devotees alike. Selected Italian and Petite prunes, thoroughly dry, wholesome and un doctored fruit, at 5 cents per lb. I dry and recommend them. One or der will convince you. Liberal dis count to dealers aud others who buy $10,00’ worth. R. D. S anford , Co quille, Oregon. 'Third Assistant Postmaster Gen- eri Madden's fight to exclude the Ap peal to Reason from Uucle Sam’s -fnails is most likely caused by the opposition of the abettors of the trusts and monopolies generally, aud is but a fools method to obstruct through prevarication that which neither Mr, Madden nor his eggers on can stand up and demonstrate to be wrong. The true Socialist stands for the high est possible type of government, one in which order is the first law, and in which one man’s rights shall not suffer because of another man’s selfish pur poses; one in which the mark of indi viduality will be to achieve the high est intelligence, or efficiency, aleng some line pertaining to the sciences of government, art, production or accomplishments. No mao or woman can find fault with such doctrine ex cept that it conflicts with their pelfisb purposes. » ’ »i—mi»» ■ ■■■ ■ ■ ■■ !"■»»■ Mvrtle Point Enterprise: A fine drove of 85 head of beef cattle were taken to Roseburg this week by Geo. England’s industrial leader ship was due to the fact that she had cheap coal and iron in abundance when the age of steam came on, and also plenty of capital and a skilled population to turn her natural re sources into commodities so cheaply that she was able to undersell the world. But to-day the supremacy in coal and iron is departed from Eng land. The United States and Germany both lead Great Britain in population, and Mr. Courtney, with respect to capita), concludes that Britain’s supremacy over America is going, if it has not already gone. Air. Court ney sees no remedy for Britain’s de cline to a mliordinnte commercial position in the future compared with lb- I i’ed States and Germany. CHAM IIEV.LA IN'S STOMACH AND The steamer Comet has been sold to parties in San Francisco and will lie taken to that port at the first favorable opportunity. W. A. Over 100 members were on the charter list and there is equally as large a number to initiate, Archie Kruse has purchased the Marshfield clam cannery of Flye & Rolandson. He intends adding some necessary machinery to the plant and expects to start operations with a large force about the 1st of the year. Manager R. E. Shine, of the S. O. Co., when asked concerning the re ports from New York relative to the serious illness of Elijah Smith, said that it was a wonderfully exaggerated story, Mr. Smith has been suffering for six months past with nervousness, and has been in a sanitarium for a long period. He is now much im proved and out of danger. The state ment that Elijah was ou the “pork’, anyone in Coos county ought to know should be taken with a grain of salt. Our football players are practicing diligently in the Armory hall every eveniug familiarizing tbemsolvos with signals and learning the formation of plays and it is safe to say will be in excellent shape for their fray with the Eureka team when the whistle blows. The date of the game is now set for some day in the vicinity of the ICth or 20tb of this month. The Eu reka players are expected on tho ar rival of the Alliance fyom San Fran- oisco, and due notice of the game will be given. ------ OCO—— The Irish in u ii ' n Request. l’nso Robles Independent. In the days when flogging was in vogue as a punishment in the British navy a Scotchman and an Irishman, on the arrival of their ship in harbor, obtained leave to go ashore for a couple of days, and they overstaid the period of leave granted them. When they did put in an appearance, they were ordered 50 lashes each. On the day of the punishment a parade was ordered to witness the infliction of the flogging. When all was ready, the Scotch man asked as a favor to be allowed a piece of canvas on his back while he received bis flogging. The captain granted hie request aud, turning to the Irishman, asked him if he required anything on bis back while he was being flogged, to which he replied, “If ye plaze, yer houor, I'd loike to have the Scotchman on my back, if ye wouldu't mind.” -—OOO— DeufiieNM Cannot Be Cared by local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. It is situated 15 miles northeast of the old military post known as Camp Verde. It is 250 feet diameter, and the clear pure water is about fit) feet below the surface of the surrounding country. Some years ago certain military officers sounded the pool and found that it had a uni form depth of 80 feet of water except in one place, apparently about six feet square, whore the sounding line went down about 500 foot without touching bottom. The well empties into Beaver creek only about 100 yards distunt, the water gushing forth from the rocks as though it were under great pres sure. The well is undoubtedly sup plied from subterranean sources, pos sibiy through the hole sounded by the army officers years ago. The sides of the well are houeyeombed with caves and tunnels, permitting sight seers to descend to the water’s edge. Montezuma’s well contains no fish. The flow of water from it is the same throughout the season. Popular opin ion has attributed the origin of the well to volcanic action, but as the rock surrounding it is limestone it is more than probable that the actiou of the water is responsible for its creation.— Native American. recognized authority—The Weekly Oreganlan. is a large, eight* page, 48 column monthly ournal for the home and f-tn.ily. About five years ago my right ear began to sing, and this kept on getting worse, until I lost my hearing in this ear entirely. . I then saw your advertisement accident ally in a New York paper, and ordered your treat ment. After I bail used it onlv a few days according to your directions, the noises ceased, and to day, after five weeks, my hearing in the di<*ea«<ed ear has beeu entirely restored.
