Socialism ¡8 not Anarchy. Social ists look forward to a time when government will have progressed aud been launched on the highway to perfection, while on the other hand the Anarchist is against, government and looks toward conditions wherein Jie can have Jicenso to do as be pleases. The true Socialist creed is bound up in the Golden llule and there has been no doctrine taught anywhere that excels this law of love. There are two distinct types of humanity who seem to be minus the full possession of at least one-of the faculties that go to make up tho well balanced mind. One of these classes is found iu anarchist ranks and the other is a member of the suicide club. The first is an enemy of order aud progress and the biggest fool extant. The second is like the first only in the disregard for consequences to his or her own life. The anarchist, wben following bis victim, seems to have no thought of escape, and is intent only on assassination and biscunning is exercised to the utmost to accom plish bis purpose. He does not seem to realize that bisown death is certain to follow his rash act, and so far as fiis own life is concerned be is like the man who joins tho suicide club and whose life may go out as a result of the first casting of lots in selecting ona to pay lhe forfeit imposed by the rules regulating tho order. The an archist lacks the intelligence to preceive that rulers aro more easily created than deposed, and for every one assassinated, a hundred men stand reaily to assume the responsi bility of the office bereft of its oc cupant. The Iow'a socialists, assembled in convention on September G, gave voice to the following: “We declare pur unalterable opposition to the competition for bread aud to the capitalistic control of the means of production and distribution, and to secure a system whereby want, misery and poverty shall be forever elim inated, we pledge ourselves to the final aud complete overthrow of all competitive aud capitalistic systems and the substitution thereof of a co operative commonwealth and collect ive ownership of al! means of produc tion and distribution. This is our construction of Socialism. Anything more is unnecessary; anything less would fail of the accomplishment of pur purpose. Onr movement is rev olutionary only in principles and ethics. Our methods are peaceful and our appeal is to the reason and conscience. ---- ooo---- A Cc nini nienti on. M r . E ditor —Allow me to speak a (ew wurds in favor of Chamberlain’s pougb Remedy. He was about 72 years of age and has no relatives ii> this state so tar as known. A little child belonging to Mr, nod Mrs. 8, S. Reed who reside near this place, was attacked bv a vicious cow yesterday and narrowly escaped being killed, receiving an ugly gore in the neck and having an eye almost torn out. Dr. Loop dressed the wounds and thinks that tbo little. one will not loose the sight of bis eye. J. W. Leneve and wife camo up from Coquille yesterday to make arrangements for moving to this place. Mr. Leneve has purchased the stock and fixtures of the store of A. H, Black & Co,, and will add a new invoice of goods and continue the business, Mr. Leneve lias been in business in Coquille from his boy- bood, and bears the reputation of being a reliable and enterprising fr™dnea<i roan. Two Hoys Narrowly Death. K mc ape i From the Dakota Ruraliat. The theory of the scientific anarch ist is that human beings, if left to their own devices, would be much better off that aosolute freedom of tbo individual is the ideal condition and tbht laws to restrict such free dom are wrong anil impose no moral obligation on the individual. The “anarchists of force”— bo called— would reconstruct society by first de stroying, by violent means if neces sary, the false social conditions of the preset.t. The paid writersof plute aud proxy-plute newspapers are very fond of mixing up anarchy with so cialism-arid of attempting to lead iguoraut people into the belief that anarchy and socialism are one aud the same. The truth is they are the antithesis of each other; even the pleasing theory of the scientific an archist has absolutely nothing in common with socialism. It is much nearer the democracy of Thomas Jef ferson who said "the best governed country is that which in governed the least.” This is very close to tho an archy taught by B. F. Tucker and Chas. A. Dana, but the socialist would merge the whole people into the gov ernment and make the government— the people—the whole thing. With the doctrines of the “anarchists of force,” the socialist lias nothing but detestation. The socialist has no desire to destroy the present social and political state, bad as they are, until a majority of the people are educated so that they may substitute something better. When that state of education is reached, our present plutocratic republic will melt into au industrial democracy without a rip ple of excitement. The change will occur so naturally that we will all wonder why it did not come sooner. And no true socialist wants a socialist government set up until that state of education is reached.
