Pierpont Morgan represents a tower of wealth aud power, the great ness of which tbe average mind is in capable of conceiving. Search back along times corridors and how many humau skeletons will coufront you in the wake of Morgan’s onward march. Great towers of wealth are built upon dead people’s bones, but it. is impossible to estimate tbewrecks left behind, or tho hopes that bave been blasted in the building of such towers. Capitol Journal: it has. just leaked out that Architect Burgraff aud John Holman of Albany were part of the bloomer basebail outfit that has been working ibe valley towns. It was suspected that part of tbe crowd were not women, and tbe grand jury of Linn county is said to be investigating these puriiculiai cases. — oco----- Wu Ting Fang, tbe Chinese minis ter delivered the 4tb of July oration at Philadelphia, Pa., last Thursday. The following extract is part of his address: “This nation, it seems to me, has not sprung into existimes without a manifest destiny. There must be some noble end for which tbe in dependence of the United States was established. It was to demónstrale to tbe world what great good to ma • kind a free and independent people can do; to establish ‘a government of the people, by the people, and for tbe people;“ to preserve law and order; to treat all people alike with fairness and justice; to do away with selfish and clannish feeling; to make Amer ican patriotism synonymous wilh fair play; with tho love of mankind, with freedom and liberty in accord nice with law and justice. By pursuing tbpse ends this republic will become the greatest power upon the earth and you citizens of this great country will be móre than ever respected mid loved by all.“ * — — —— *-♦ ® •- Wiossi in ul. Sir Iln ïn " - — Bici The* Cuiigreaxlonal J iiuketins Party. lucrease The Capitol Journal, of Salem, iu speaking of the Congressional party which has been visiting the West Hnd Northwest ostensibly in the in terest of tbe people generally, for tbe purpose of determining wliat improve nients can be made to further the producing interests of tbe Great West, presents the following brief commeut upou the utility of the com mission: When we cousider tbe performance of one man Harriman, of Wall street, beiug practically in control of three great Trans Continental lines, tbe unties of a little handful of politicians coming out West and inspecting our rivers and harbors, to see wbat can be done to improve them, aud make I hem more effective competitors of Harriman et al., are euough to make tbe HUgela weep. When it is grasped that the shinplaster filching states men who throng tbe Washington boarding houses, when they are not deadlieutiog about tbe country on some junketing tour, are riding on special trains furnished them lo go about the country aud lay awake nights to see bow they can device ways and means to ent down tbe div idends of tbe plutocrats whose tem porary lackeys they are, it is enough to make the people of this earth shed tbe briny tear at being such everlast ing damphools. Of course, the leather lunged bowlers who fill the congressional records with spoutings on expansion and tariff for rural eon- s mu pt ion must laugh in their sleeves at. the gullibility of tho sucker voters who drive miles to get a chance to drop a ballot for the continuation of this farce. But our government survives in spite of these processes. Like a gigantic megatberm of the . eolithic ages, tbe American political mastodon plunges on, bis ilaiilisdang ling with parasites and leeelr's living on bis life blood, lint strong enough to support them all nnd still hold his place in ibe jungle of nations. But tbe wolves of aggregated capital are snapping at his throat, and unless some way is found to cut Ibeir fangs or divert their attention to other game, this government will become weakened by their rapacity, aud the old Republican elephant go down in tbe mire. Iu the mean itue some one ought take a stick aud beat off the parasites, nt least dining Ibe vacation of congress. ------- 030------ Sure of öf.c Thing. iu Circulating .71 rd iu in. W ashington . About tbe most interesting set of fellows in every community are tbe geniuses who imagine they are great and talented and destined to shine in tbe world nnd who are logrolling and crowding to tbe front like thirsty oxen at a watering trough, each afraid the world is not going to recognize his greatness. They have a horn in tbe side for this one, a hunch for that one, aud a general desire to trample down all who stand in the way of their success iu getting there. Such h ive no principle of live and lot-five in their composition. They never knowingly parade the virtues of another, or speak unreservedly of tbe good qualities of a fellow creature. Ail their friends are so many useful pieces of furniture, so many stepping stones for them, to climb. Society is a kind of Step ladder by which they mount over tho garden wall of success sad grasp their fill of the fruit grow ing there and never thinking that another’s mouth is watering, and that another bus desires and f< clings which in their mad scramble they laave rudely pushed aside. Tbe true yiew of life has never broken oil these sordid undeveloped natures. They are swallowed up in self seeking, for getting that bo is greatest who most faithfully serves others, and thiit the Son of Man came not to be ministered •to, but to minister unto others.
