Lane County summit renamed
after Kalapuyan chief
A mountain 35 miles southeast of Eugene has been officially
renamed as Mount Halo, a name derived from Kalapuyan Chief
Halito who lived in the 1800s and whose village was 20 miles west
of the summit.
The 4,200-foot peak was previously called Swastika Mountain,
a name that became controversial because of its association with
Nazism and Hitler9s Third Reich.
Tribal member David Lewis, who is an assistant professor of
anthropology and ethnic and Indigenous studies at Oregon State
University, said renaming the peak was necessary because of its
association with World War II and fascism.
<We need to at times revisit names that have been given to the
land, and to rivers, and towns, and maybe replace those with things
that have more resonance with today9s society,= Lewis said.
The U.S. Board of Geographic Names approved the name change
on April 13 and it took effect immediately.
Swastika Mountain9s namesake predated World War II and was
reportedly named for a local ranch in Lane County that branded
cattle with the symbol. þ
