Clothes Closet open Friday mornings The Clothes Closet is open from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the fi rst and third Fri- days of the month and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. all other Fridays on the Tribal campus near the Elders Activity Center at the end of Blacktail Drive. The Clothes Closet accepts clothing, small appliances, small pieces of furniture, electronics and household goods that are clean and in good con- dition. It does not accept books, large TVs or large furniture, but there is a community board where people can post those items. Kennedy and Salem Mayor Chuck Bennett signed a memorandum of understanding during a ceremony held at Salem City Council Chambers on Tuesday, Feb. 18. The MOU pledges that Tribal representatives and the city will work collaboratively to establish a database, which will include known archaeological sites and Tribally signifi cant areas with a high probability of historic and pre-contact signifi cance. The MOU also moves to ensure consistent contact between the city and Tribe with “constructive dialogue and problem solving that will promote cooperation.” The city pledges to annually proclaim November as Native American Heritage Month and that the city’s Historic Landmarks Committee will develop activities in collaboration with the Tribe to honor the month. Salem is part of the area ceded to the federal government in the 1855 Willamette Valley Treaty by several bands of the Kalapuya and other Willamette Valley Tribes. Mayor Chuck Bennett signed the MOU for the city. n WIC visits Community Center monthly Pregnant? Breastfeeding? Does your family include a child under the age of 5? If so, you may qualify for the Women, Infants and Children program. With WIC, people can receive answers to nutritional questions and access fruits and vegetables, whole grains, eggs, milk, cheese, juice, cereal and more. A WIC representative visits the Tribal Community Center on the third Tuesday of the month, which will be March 17.
