Health & Wellness holding Hep C event on May 18 The Tribal Health & Wellness Center will be holding a Hepatitis C educational event from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday, May 18, in the clinic atrium, 9615 Grand Ronde Road. American Indians and Alaska Natives have the highest Hepatitis C mortality rate of any race or ethnicity, and Baby Boomers born between 1945-65 have the highest rate of infection. Unfortunately, people who have the disease might not even know it, which is why the Tribe is asking Tribal and community members to come in for a blood test to determine if they might be infected. The cure is an 8- to 12-week round of antiviral pills and is effective in almost all cases. To hear Dr. Randy Blome discuss the disease and the event in more depth, visit www.spreaker.com and search for “Smoke Signals podcasts” to listen to a podcast that was posted on Thursday, May 3. For more information about the event, call 503-879-2002. LIHEAP program open in service area The Tribal Social Service’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Pro- gram is open to eligible Tribal members in the six-county service area and Clackamas County. This is a first-come, first-served program and income criteria applies. The program is federally funded through the Department of Health and Human Services and is designed to help low-income households with home heating costs. For more information, contact Social Services at 503- 879-2034. WIC visits Community Center monthly Pregnant? Breastfeeding? Does your family include a child under the age of 5? A WIC representative visits the Tribal Community Center on the third Tuesday of the month, which will be May 15 and June 19. Walk-ins are welcome between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 503-879- 2034. Polk County conducting survey Polk County is conducting a West Valley Transportation Survey as it seeks input on the transportation needs of residents in the West Valley area. The survey seeks to conduct a preliminary assessment to determine interest and perceived need for public transportation in the West Valley area (Grand Ronde, Fort Hill and Willamina) to Dallas, Monmouth and Independence. “It is especially important that we hear from the residents themselves about their transportation needs and interests,” said Brent DeMoe, Polk County Family & Community Outreach Department director. To take the survey, visit www.surveymonkey.com/r/FMBHVBK. In addition, paper copies of the survey are available at the Grand Ronde Food Bank, 9675 Grand Ronde Road. For more information, contact Alinna Ghavami, Community Engagement coordinator, at 503-623-9664, ext. 2457, or by e-mail at Ghavami.alinna@ co.polk.or.us.
