McKnight June 9, 1930 – Sept. 14, 2017 Tribal Elder June Everetta McK- night, 87, a resident of Salem walked on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017, at her home. She was born June 9, 1930, in Grand Ronde, the daughter of Ev- erett and Oleta Riggs Drake. She lived in Grand Ronde until moving to Salem in 1961. She married Raymond Laverne McKnight and they later divorced. She worked in various Salem-area hotels as a maid. June was an avid Portland Trail Blazers basketball and Seattle Mariners baseball fan and would rarely miss a game. She also enjoyed flower gardening. She was a member of the Catholic Church and the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. She is survived by her son, Kevin McKnight of Salem, and daugh- ter, RaeAnn Mussell of Canada, as well as 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three children, Steve, Linda and Cheryl McKnight; three grandchildren, Stephanie Mussell and Michelle and Kevyn McKnight; and her husband. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in the Grand Ronde Tribal gym. The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde received a $500,000 grant for the design and construction of a 1,900-square-foot Behavioral Health ad- dition to the Tribe’s Health & Wellness Center from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on Friday, Sept. 15. According to the Tribe’s application for the Indian Community Devel- opment Block Grant, the demand in the community for behavioral health services has grown in the past 20 years. The current area is cramped, with limited capacity and it is difficult to maintain confidentiality barriers. In addition, there is now twice as many counseling and therapy groups as in the past, including alcohol and drug sessions. There also is an unmet need for groups of men, continued care support, cultural support, parenting, anger management and pain management. The Tribe will commit $167,000 in matching funds for the addition. The addition will use the lawn area between the existing building and existing parking lot sidewalk.
