S moke S ignals FEBRUARY 1, 2017 3 Food Bank provides LIHEAP program boxes, seeks help open in service area The Grand Ronde Food Bank – iskam mfkhmfk haws – is operated by Marion-Polk Food Share, which was been leading the fight to end hunger since 1987 because no one should be hungry. Recipients of SNAP, TANF, SSI or LIHEAP assistance automat- ically qualify for assistance at the Grand Ronde Food Bank, 9675 Grand Ronde Road. No one will be turned away in need of a food box. “We believe that everyone deserves to have enough to eat,” says Food Bank Coordinator Francene Ambrose. “You are welcome to get a food box at each of our regular weekly distributions. No one will be turned away in need of a food box.” Upcoming food box distribution dates are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17; and 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22. The Food Bank will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20, in observance of the Tribal Chiefs’ Day holiday. Those who are unable to pick up a food box can fill out an autho- rized representative form and that person can pick up a food box on your behalf. The authorization is good for one year. The Food Bank continues to seek volunteers to help with repack- ing food, putting food on the shelves, handing out food boxes and end-of-month inventory. In addition, the Food Bank is participating in a program called Fresh Alliance in which volunteers pick up food donations directly from area stores. Volunteers with a truck who could pick up at these stores at least once a week and a partner to ride along and help load are being sought. Call to ensure someone is available to assist. People also can sign up for a monthly e-mail for the Food Bank calendar and events, as well as follow the Food Bank on Facebook. The Food Bank is an equal opportunity provider. The Tribal Social Service’s LIHEAP – Low Income Home Energy As- sistance Program – is open to eligible Tribal members in the six-county service area and Clackamas County. This is a first-come, first-served program and income criteria applies. LIHEAP is federally funded through the Department of Health and Human Services and is designed to help low-income households with home heating costs. For more information, contact Social Services at 503-879-2034. Twenty-seven seats set to expire The Tribe’s myriad committees and special event boards will have 27 positions expiring on March 31. ATTENTION TRIBAL MEMBERS COMMITTEE AND SPECIAL EVENT BOARD VACANCIES The following Committees and Special Event Boards have vacant positions. WIC visits Health & Wellness Center Pregnant? Breastfeeding? Does your family include a child under the age of 5? If so, you may qualify for the Women, Infants and Children program. With WIC, people can receive answers to nutritional questions and access fruits and vegetables, whole grains, eggs, milk, cheese, juice, cereal and more. A WIC representative visits the Health & Wellness Center on the third Tuesday of the month, which will be Feb. 21. Walk-ins are welcome between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. When WIC clients arrive at the Health & Wellness Center, they should enter through the Wellness Department located at the back of the medical wing. It accepts clothes, small appliances, small pieces of furniture, elec- tronics and household goods that are clean and in good condition. It does not accept books, large TVs or large furniture, but there is a community board where people can post those items. Donations are accepted during regular business hours.
