S moke S ignals OCTOBER 1, 2016 3 Food Bank provides Tribe receives $1.45 boxes, seeks help million in Justice grants The Grand Ronde Food Bank – iskam mfkhmfk haws – is operated by Marion-Polk Food Share, which was been leading the fight to end hunger since 1987 because no one should be hungry. Recipients of SNAP, TANF, SSI or LIHEAP assistance automatically qualify for assistance at the Grand Ronde Food Bank, 9675 Grand Ronde Road. No one will be turned away in need of a food box. Upcoming food box distributions will be held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21; and 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26. The Food Bank is continuing its preservation and canning classes. The next one will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, focusing on meat and fish. The Food Bank also is holding its annual Spookghetti Fest fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 29, at a location and time to be determined. A spaghet- ti meal will be served followed by a silent and oral auction fundraiser. The Food Bank is seeking volunteers and items for the auctions. “We believe that everyone deserves to have enough to eat,” says Food Bank Coordinator Francene Ambrose. “You are welcome to get a food box at each of our regular weekly distributions. No one will be turned away in need of a food box.” Those who are unable to pick up a food box can fill out an authorized representative form and that person can pick up a food box on your behalf. The authorization is good for one year. The Food Bank continues to seek volunteers to help with repacking food, putting food on the shelves, handing out food boxes and end-of- month inventory. In addition, the Food Bank is participating in a pro- gram called Fresh Alliance in which volunteers pick up food donations directly from area stores. Volunteers with a truck who could pick up at these stores at least once a week and a partner to ride and help load are being sought. Mandatory volunteer training is scheduled at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11. Call to ensure someone is available to assist. The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde received more than $1.45 mil- lion in grants from the U.S. Department of Justice on Monday, Sept. 26, to help improve public safety, help victims and strengthen Tribal institutions. The grants were announced by Attorney General Loretta Lynch during the eighth annual White House Tribal Nations Conference being held in Washington, D.C. The Tribe received a $298,585 Public Safety and Community Policing grant that will help the Tribal Police Department retain an officer and maintain 24/7 police coverage, a $364,483 Corrections and Correctional Alternatives grant to help fund construction of and purchase equipment for the Tribal police station and renovate the men’s transitional living center and purchase furnishings and equipment, a $445,044 Violence Against Women grant to help the Tribe staff its domestic violence victim assistance and reduction program, and a $343,596 Tribal Youth Program grant. “These vital grants support everything from hiring law enforcement officers to empowering Native youth, giving Tribes the resources they need to meet the particular challenges facing their communities,” Lynch said. The Department of Justice distributed more than $107 million spread out over 249 grants to American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Tribal Council approved applying for the grants during its Feb. 17 meeting.
