Elder’s chair volleyball team takes second LAUGHLIN, Nev. – Tribal Elder Connie Lopez’s chair volleyball team Hummingbirds I traveled to the Avi Resort in Laughlin, Nev., from the Pascua Yaqui Reservation in Tucson, Ariz., on Aug. 16-17 to participate in a chair volleyball tournament hosted by the Fort Mohave Tribe. Thirty-three Indian Elder chair volleyball teams participated from Ar- izona and southern California in the two-day event. On Aug. 16, teams played five matches and then the teams were placed in three brackets: gold, silver and bronze. Each bracket provided teams a chance to play for championship and consolation trophies. Hummingbirds I were placed in the silver bracket. After they won two matches on Aug. 17, they played the Ak-Chin Lizards in the silver bracket finals and took home the runner-up trophy and medals. “I felt great joy in bringing the silver runner-up trophy back to the Senior Center where I have been active since I retired in 2005 from teaching,” Lopez said. “Our chair volleyball team intends to keep trying to do their best in future chair volleyball tournaments.” Lopez is the daughter of Darrell and the late Ruth Mercier.
