S MOKE S IGNALS DECEMBER 15, 2015 Food Bank provides boxes, seeks help If you receive SNAP, TANF, SSI or LIHEAP assistance, you auto- matically qualify for assistance at the Grand Ronde Food Bank, 9675 Grand Ronde Road. No one will be turned away in need of a food box. Upcoming food box distribution dates will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30. Holiday food boxes will be distributed on Wednesday, Dec. 23, from 2 to 6 p.m. The food bank will be closed at noon Thursday, Dec. 24, closed on Christmas Day, closed at noon Thursday, Dec. 31, and closed on New Year’s Day. Those who are unable to pick up a food box may fi ll out an authorized representative form and that person can pick up a food box on your behalf. The authorization is good for one year. The Grand Ronde Food Bank – iskam mfkhmfk haws – is run by Marion-Polk Food Share, which has been leading the fi ght to end hunger since 1987 because no one should be hungry. “It takes a community to fi ght local hunger,” says Food Bank Coordi- nator Francene Ambrose. “Your gift of time and talent means so much to individuals, families and children who are struggling. We are looking for assistance in repacking food, putting food on the shelves, handing out food boxes on distribution days and end-of-the-month inventory. Groups are welcome and other opportunities are available.” Volunteers are needed on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 22-23, to help with extra food for the Christmas holiday. Call on non-distribution days to ensure someone is available to as- sist you. For more information, contact Social Services at 503-879-2034. n Grand Ronde in path of 2017 solar eclipse The daytime sky will go dark in Grand Ronde on Monday, Aug. 21, 2017, as a total solar eclipse will block the sun. According to www.eclipse2017.org, the sun will actually rise in the Pacifi c Ocean while eclipsed, which is a sight that few people have ever seen, and the shadow will start racing across the surface of the water at supersonic speed. The shadow – the umbral cone – will make landfall at a rocky spot just north of Newport at about 10:15 a.m. and experience a full minute and 50 seconds of totality. Darkness will then envelope Lincoln City and Depoe Bay and race eastward to Grand Ronde, Dallas, Albany, Lebanon, Philo- math, McMinnville, Woodburn and Salem. In eastern Oregon, the eclipse will darken the skies over Warm Springs, Mitchell, Prairie City and Ontario before moving into Idaho, Montana, Wy- oming, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The swath of the shadow will touch the United States for slightly more than 93 minutes. After continuing out over the Atlantic Ocean, the shadow will not touch any more land, lifting off the Earth’s surface near Africa. Spirit Mountain Casino General Manager Stan Dillon said the lodge has not seen any out of the ordinary interest in reservations for August 2017 yet. n Special Event Board seeking help The Tribal Veterans Special Event Board is attempting to recruit younger veterans – Iraqi and Afghanistan veterans – to join. “Our committee is getting older,” said Veterans SEB Chairman Steve Bobb Sr., who is a Vietnam War-era Marine Corps veteran. Members of the SEB attend events as fl ag carriers and represent the Tribe, as well as their branch of service. Clothes Closet open Monday, Friday The Clothes Closet is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday and Friday on the Tribal campus near the Elders Activity Center at the end of Blacktail Drive. It accepts clothes, small appliances, small pieces of furniture, elec- tronics and household goods that are clean and in good condition. It does not accept books, large TVs or large furniture, but there is a community board where people can post those items. Donations are accepted during regular business hours.
