18 S MOKE S IGNALS DECEMBER 1, 2015 Second jackpot hit on ‘Sons of Anarchy’ slots at casino Carl Cook of Portland hit a $517,300 jackpot on a “Sons of Anarchy” progressive slot machine at Spirit Mountain Casino on Nov. 22, becoming the second person to do so this year. In September, Donald Stanley of Portland won $934,185 playing the slot machine. So far, Spirit Mountain Casino is the only casino in the Northwest, including California and Idaho, to have a wide-area progressive jackpot winner on a “Sons of Anarchy” slot machine, said Advertising Supervisor Angela Sears. Cook is a longtime guest of Spirit Mountain Casino. He usually plays craps, but said he enjoys playing the “Sons of Anarchy” slot machines, which he has been playing since they were installed in the casino in July. Cook, who enjoys restoring classic cars, said he plans to use some of the winnings to fi nish the restoration of a recently purchased 1955 Ford Thunderbird and 1977 Ford Mustang. “I used to go to Las Vegas once a month, but I like Spirit Mountain Casino so much that I don’t have to go to the airport and wait in lines anymore,” Cook said. “I was a diamond card holder in Las Vegas, but it doesn’t matter anymore. I like Spirit Mountain Casino.” n Frank receives Medal of Freedom Northwest Tribal leader Billy Frank Jr. posthumously received the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Tuesday, Nov. 24. Frank was a tireless advocate for Indian treaty rights and environmental stewardship whose activism paved the way for the Boldt decision, which reaffi rmed Tribal co-management of salmon resources in Washington state. Frank led effective “fi sh-ins,” which were modeled after sit-ins of the civil rights movement, during the Tribal “fi sh wars” of the 1960s and 1970s. “His magnetic personality and tireless advocacy over more than fi ve decades made him a revered fi gure both domestically and abroad,” stated a White House press release. Frank was the recipient of many awards, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Service Award for Humanitarian Achievement. “Frank left in his wake an Indian Country strengthened by greater sovereignty and a nation fortifi ed by his example of service to one’s com- munity, his humility, and his dedication to the principles of human rights and environmental sustainability,” the release said. Frank was a member of the Nisqually Indian Community. He walked on in May 2014. Frank joined the likes of baseball players Yogi Berra and Willie Mays, Congresswomen Shirley Chisholm and Barbara Mikulski, singers Gloria Estefan, Barbra Streisand and James Taylor, conductor Itzhak Perlman and director Steven Spielberg in being honored. n The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde’s Tribal Youth Prevention and Behavioral Health Programs invites you to take a healthy Risk...
