Carroll Eugene Palmer Jr. May 17, 1967 – Oct. 21, 2015 Grand Ronde Tribal member “Sonny” Carroll Eugene Palmer Jr., 48, passed away on Oct. 21, 2015, in Yakima, Wash. He was born on May 17, 1967, in Toppenish, Wash., to Carroll and Sandi (Sanchey) Palmer Sr. Sonny graduated from White Swan High School with the Class of 1985. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a second bachelor’s degree in Chemical Dependency from Oregon State University. While at UCSB, he won Division One All-American Volleyball as a setter. Sonny spent his life as a volleyball coach. He will be remembered for how he could communicate and lead a young athlete into becoming the best they could be. He is survived by his loving family: spouse, Justin Young; son, Jadyn Joseph Palmer-Young; parents, Carroll and Sandra Palmer; brothers, Calvin and Chris Palmer; sister, Stacy (David) Hill; grandmother aun- tie, Ada Brisbois; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Sonny was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joe and Ma- bel Palmer, George and Matilda Sanchey, and Melvin and Hazel Guardipee. A Rosary service was held Friday, Oct. 23, at Merritt Funeral Home in Wapato, Wash. Funeral services were held at the funeral home on Saturday, Oct. 24. the years she enjoyed her many dogs and also her last companion, Daisy Cat. Most of all she enjoyed her family. Each year she held a Thanksgiving dinner where everyone in the family and their friends were welcomed. She also hosted large family gatherings on Christ- mas, May Day, her anniversary and Lyle’s birthday. Josphine was a proud member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. She was an original member of St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Sweet Home. Josephine was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; father and mother, Joseph and Alvina; sister, Veronica Mollenhour; and two grandsons, Anthony and Andrew Harry. She is survived by her children, Martha (Glen) Jones, Michael (Nancy) Warren, Jo Beth (Phil) Harry, Jeffrey (Irene) Warren, An- thony (Laura) Warren, Matthew (Candy) Warren and Angela (Dale) Thoma; sister, Teresa Mausen; 31 grandchildren, 41 great-grand- children, 24 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great- grandchild. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The family extends their gratitude to Albany Samaritan Hospital and Visiting Angels, especially Rosemary and Ann, for the care Josephine received. Viewing was held Friday, Oct. 16, at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. A Rosary followed. Funeral Mass was held Saturday, Oct. 17, at St. Helen’s Catholic Church followed by a reception in the church hall. Burial followed at Gilliland Cemetery. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel handled the arrangements. Shirley Ann Langley Josephine Carolyn Warren May 1, 1923 – Oct. 13, 2015 Tribal Elder Josephine Carolyn Warren, 92, of Sweet Home passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 13. She was born in Grand Ronde to Joseph H. Copeland and Alvina A. (Parker) Copeland. Her youth was spent in Grand Ronde, Dolph (Hebo), Tillamook and Sweet Home. She graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1941. She met her future husband, Lyle D. Warren, at a dance in Rickreall, Ore. Josephine and Lyle were married at St. Ed- ward’s Catholic Church in Lebanon, Ore., on July 5, 1941. They were married for 73 years until Lyle’s death on Sept. 17, 2014. During their early marriage and Lyle’s World War II service, she lived in Corvallis. After the war and her husband’s graduation from Oregon State College, they lived in Springfield, Coos Bay and Everett before settling in Sweet Home in 1953. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, flying, camping, rock hunting and ATV riding with her husband. She caught many salmon fishing out of Newport aboard her namesake boat “Josephine.” She collected antiques and in her younger years decorated cakes. In her later years, she liked to read, play Scrabble and put together jigsaw puzzles. Over Natural Resources issuing wood permits The Natural Resources Department started issuing wood permits on Oct. 16. With fire season still in effect, all permit holders must have with them while cutting on the Reservation a shovel and one gallon of water or 2.5-pound fire extinguisher, and no smoking is permitted outside the vehicle. Wood gathered with Natural Resources-issued permits is for personal use only and not for sale. There is still road work being performed on the Reservation and it is also hunting season, so there will be traffic. Have the following information when obtaining a permit: Tribal ID, current address, phone number, vehicle information and driver’s license. Wednesday hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to allow for morning administrative meetings. Other hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. For more information, call 503-304-7600 or 800-452-7623. n Oct. 4, 1936 – Oct. 21, 2015 Shirley Ann Langley of Grand Ronde went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 21, 2015, at the age of 79. She was born in Wadena, Minn., on Oct. 4, 1936, to Archie Edward and Hazel Irene (Cheney) Keller. She attended school in Wadena and Orr, Minn., until age 10 when she moved to Oregon and attended schools in Ballston, Gooseneck and Willamina. Later she met and married Clarence Dale Langley in 1957. They spent 56 years married. Shirley had many hobbies throughout her life, including horse- back riding, taking pictures, camping, bow hunting, traveling and attending her church (Lighthouse Gospel), but most importantly she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family. They were the loves of her life. She is survived by sons, Edward, John and Bryan Langley; daugh- ters, Kathy Werst, Debbie Dolan and Ashley Langley; brother, Bill Keller; sister, Darlene Butler; and 36 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; brother, James Keller; sister, Ramona Langley; son, Mike Langley; and both of her parents. A funeral was held Thursday, Oct. 29, in the Tribal gym in Grand Ronde. A viewing was held at the Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
