VFW seeking Patriot’s Pen submissions Middle school students in sixth through eighth grades can enter the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Patriot’s Pen youth essay competition and compete to win thousands of dollars in national awards. The Patriot’s Pen competition started in 1995 to encourage youth to examine American history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by composing a 300- to 400-word patriotic-themed essay. The theme this year is “What Freedom Means to Me.” Students begin by competing in the local Post level and progress to district, state and national competitions. Deadline for student entries is Nov. 1. Local students can submit their entry to the Post chairman at Post 4211, P.O. Box 237, Willamina, OR 97396. VFW seeking Voice of Democracy scholarship entries The Veterans of Foreign Wars is seeking high school students to enter its Voice of Democracy scholarship competition. Students must write and record a three- to five-minute essay using an audio CD or flash drive and present their recording, typed essay and com- pleted entry form to their local VFW Post by Nov. 1. This year’s theme is “My Vision for America.” Students compete at the post level and then proceed to district, state and national competitions. All state first-place winners receive a four-day trip to Washington, D.C., and compete for their share of more than $150,000 in scholarships. The first-place national winner receives a $30,000 college scholarship. Student can submit their entry to the Post chairman at Post 4211, P.O. Box 237, Willamina, OR 97396. The GED diploma opens the doors of vocational & apprenticeship programs, community colleges, and universities. 2015-16 United States Senate Youth Program The Oregon Department of Education invites all high school juniors and seniors to apply for the 2015-16 United States Senate Youth Program. The U.S. Senate Youth Program, established in 1962 by U.S. Senate Resolution, is a unique educational experience for outstanding high school students interested in pursuing careers in public service. Two student leaders from Oregon will spend a week in Washington, D.C., to experience their national government in action. Student delegates will hear major policy addresses by Senators, cabinet members, officials from the departments of State and Defense and directors of other federal agencies, as well as participate in a meeting with a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. All transportation, hotel and meal expenses will be provided by the Hearst Foundations. In addition, each delegate will also be awarded a $5,000 college scholarship for undergraduate studies, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science. CTGR Higher Education Program deadlines set There are now only two Higher Education programs depending on whether you are full-time or part-time. The deadline for the Full- Time College program is at least 30 days before the start of classes. The deadline for the Part-Time College program is at least 10 days before the start of class.
