The acquisitions, Chahalpam Phase 2 and Rattlesnake Butte Phase 3, were funded by the Bonneville Power Administration and are to be managed in perpetuity for the benefit of native fish and wildlife species. Chahalpam Phase 2, acquired on January 9, 2015, is located just southwest of Stayton, Oregon. It is a 91-acre property that lies in the historical floodplain of the North Santiam River and has approximately 3,000 feet of river frontage, as well as an additional 2,600 feet of side channel and back channel habitats. The restoration and protection of the property will benefit an array of native wildlife species including “at risk” species such as spring Chinook salmon, winter steelhead, Pacific lamprey, Oregon chub, red-legged frog, western pond turtle, Little Willow Flycatcher, and Pileated Woodpecker. The total acreage for Chahalpam (combined Phase 1 and 2) is 429 acres. Rattlesnake Butte Phase 3, acquired on May 8, 2015, is a 172-acre upland prairie and oak woodland parcel located approximately 5 miles SE of Monroe, Oregon in the coastal mountain foothills. The property was named Rattlesnake Butte due to the presence of western rattlesnakes. Formerly common on the valley floor and in the foothills, rattlesnakes now persist at fewer than a dozen locations in the Willamette Subbasin. The western rattlesnake is one of many species that have been affected by the loss of upland prairie and oak woodland habitats. These habitats also sustain good numbers of Blacktail deer and Roosevelt elk. The total acreage for Rattlesnake Butte (combined Phases 1, 2, and 3) is 269 acres.
