2 S MOKE S IGNALS APRIL 15, 2015 NOTICE — Monthly Tribal Council Wednesday Meetings DATE TIME Wednesday, April 15...........................................................................5 p.m. (The April 15 meeting will be held in the Tribal gym.) Wednesday, April 22...........................................................................5 p.m. Please note that these times and dates are subject to change if needed. Letters Dear Smoke Signals: I want to especially thank my kids for the wonderful 80th birthday party they had for me. Thanks to all my friends and relatives who came to help me celebrate. Thanks to the caregivers for bringing all the Elders from Cougar and Elk lodges to help me celebrate. I wish I would have had more time to spend with each of you. Need to have a big friend and family reunion this summer. Quite some time ago, I asked for help in getting a headstone for Grand- ma Leno. Then in September, I got in an accident and broke both of my knees. I’ve been through hell and haven’t been able to do much; only one brace left, so I’m getting there. We have raised $1,250 so far, but have about $1,500 to go, so all you grandkids and great-grandkids and relatives of Grandma Leno please donate what you can so Grandma can have a headstone. Please send donations to Val Grout, P.O. Box 113, Grand Ronde, OR 97347. Thank you to those of you who already gave. I will let you know when we reach our goal. Thanks again and God bless you all. Thanks again, kids. I love you all so much. The Northwest Portland Area In- dian Health Board was established in 1972 and includes delegates from the 43 federally recognized Tribes in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Grand Ronde Tribal Council member Cheryle A. Kennedy is the Tribe’s longtime delegate to the Health Board and currently serves as its vice chairwoman. Before be- coming a Tribal Council member, Kennedy led the Tribe’s burgeoning health programs in the 1980s. Health Board delegates meet quarterly to create and update a strategic plan, which covers four main areas: health promotion and disease prevention, legislative and policy analysis, training and tech- nical assistance, and surveillance and research. The quarterly meeting will ac- tually start at 2 p.m. Monday, April 20, with a meeting of Tribal health directors. At 9 a.m. Tues- day, Health Board Chairman Andy Joseph (Colville) will call the meet- ing to order and the Grand Ronde Honor Guard will post the colors. Executive Director Joe Finkbonner (Lummi) will give a report at 9:15 a.m. Following an afternoon session on social media and cyberbullying, delegates are scheduled to tour the Grand Ronde Health and Wellness Center on Tuesday afternoon and eat a dinner at the casino hosted by the Grand Ronde Tribe after the tour. Kennedy is scheduled to give the Wednesday call to order and invo- cation, which will be followed by reports on oral health disparities, a wellness update and the board’s sexual assault prevention project. The meeting concludes on Thurs- day morning with Joseph deliver- ing the chairman’s report followed by reports from the Health Board’s various committees – Elders, Vet- erans, Public Health, Behavioral Health, Personnel and Legislative. Health Board Executive Adminis- trative Assistant Elaine Dado said the quarterly meetings usually at- tract about 35 of the 43 delegates.
