Nixwa’s friends
Veronica Gaston pets Nixwa, the Tribal K-9 officer, during a Friends
for Nixwa meeting held at the Tribal Community Center on Tuesday,
May 13, as Grand Ronde Police Department Officer Patrick McConnell,
Nixwa’s handler and partner, holds his leash. Gaston is the organizer
of the group that is raising funds to purchase the canine police officer
a bulletproof vest, which cost about $1,000. She is currently selling
raffle tickets for $1 to win prizes including a Pendleton blanket, a two-
night stay at Spirit Mountain Casino, dinner for two at the casino and
an American Red Cross survival kit. The raffle drawing is expected to
take place at the General Council meeting on Sunday, May 1, at the
Community Center. For more information or to purchase raffle tickets,
contact Gaston at 503-560-217.
