The Ceremonial Hunting Board congratulated Steve Brooks for
harvesting the first elk of the year for the Tribe. “Ceremonial hunters
are doing a great job providing meat for cultural events,” said board
Chairwoman Marline Groshong. “We hope to keep up the good work
by our volunteers.” For more information about the board, contact
Groshong at 503-7-7000.
Tribal member Veronica Gaston is organizing Friends for Nixwa,
the Tribal K-9 officer, in hopes of raising funds to purchase the canine
police officer a bulletproof vest.
The group’s first meeting will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday,
May 13, in the Tribal Community Center.
Nixwa and his partner, Officer Patrick McConnell, will attend, as
will Grand Ronde Police Chief Al LaChance.
Nixwa is a 2.5-year-old Belgian Malinois. He and McConnell just
completed training in Arizona.
Bulletproof vests for canine officers cost about $1,000.
For more information, contact Gaston at 503-560-8217. n
