Tribal member Veronica Gaston is organizing Friends for Nixwa, the Tribal K-9 officer, in hopes of raising funds to purchase the canine police officer a bulletproof vest. The group’s first meeting will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, in the Tribal Community Center. Nixwa and his partner, Officer Patrick McConnell, will attend, as will Grand Ronde Police Chief Al LaChance. Nixwa is a 2.5-year-old Belgian Malinois.
