Tribe participating in Feb. 1
Willamette Falls event
Tribal members will be participating in “Willamette Falls: Where
the Future Began,” which will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday,
Feb. 1, at the Museum of the Oregon Territory, 211 Tumwater
Drive, Oregon City.
At 1 p.m., new Tribal art will be unveiled and dedicated with a
blessing songs and cultural address from representatives of the Con-
federated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Tribal members Bobby Mercier
and Brian Krehbiel designed benches for seating at the museum’s
PGE Willamette Falls Theatre. The two original, hard-carved
salmon benches honor the salmon’s sacred tie to the falls.
Grand Ronde Tribal Historian David Lewis also will be making
a presentation during the event.
Also during the event, the documentary “Willamette Falls: Where
the Future Began,” will be shown. Tribal Cultural Protection Pro-
gram Manager Eirik Thorsgard helped narrate part of the Portland
General Electric documentary that covers the falls’ ecological, cul-
tural and industrial relevance.
Other activities during the day will include children’s’ crafts,
folk music, a paper-making workshop and free admission to the
museum.
The event is a collaboration between the Confederated Tribes
of Grand Ronde, Portland General Electric, Oregon’s Mt. Hood
Territory, the West Linn Paper Co. and the Clackamas County
Historical Society.
