S moke S ignals february 1, 2014 Tribe participating in Feb. 1 Willamette Falls event Tribal members will be participating in “Willamette Falls: Where the Future Began,” which will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Museum of the Oregon Territory, 211 Tumwater Drive, Oregon City. At 1 p.m., new Tribal art will be unveiled and dedicated with a blessing songs and cultural address from representatives of the Con- federated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Tribal members Bobby Mercier and Brian Krehbiel designed benches for seating at the museum’s PGE Willamette Falls Theatre. The two original, hard-carved salmon benches honor the salmon’s sacred tie to the falls. Grand Ronde Tribal Historian David Lewis also will be making a presentation during the event. Also during the event, the documentary “Willamette Falls: Where the Future Began,” will be shown. Tribal Cultural Protection Pro- gram Manager Eirik Thorsgard helped narrate part of the Portland General Electric documentary that covers the falls’ ecological, cul- tural and industrial relevance. Other activities during the day will include children’s’ crafts, folk music, a paper-making workshop and free admission to the museum. The event is a collaboration between the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, Portland General Electric, Oregon’s Mt. Hood Territory, the West Linn Paper Co. and the Clackamas County Historical Society. Public Works Coordinator John Mercier said at the Jan. 21 Legis- lative Action Committee meeting that the $223,570.15 was a por- tion of the funding that the Tribe will receive for its Transportation Program. In other action on Jan. 22, Trib- al Council: • Approved an agreement be- tween the Tribe and the Re- gional Automated Information Network, as well as an agree- ment between the Tribe and the city of Salem, for police records management software services. • Approved a three-year agree- ment with Automated Elec- tions Services of Rio Rancho, N.M., to provide technical support for Tribal elections. • Approved the enrollment of two infants and the disenroll- ment of one Tribal member for violating the Tribal Constitu- tion’s prohibition regarding dual enrollment in another federally recognized Tribe. • Approved the agenda for the Feb. 2 General Council meet- ing. There will be a presenta- tion by the Social Services Committee regarding the Trib- al Employment Rights Office, the 477 programs, career de- velopment and the temp pool. Also included in the Jan. 22 Tribal Council packet were au- thorizations to proceed that: • Set the base monthly stipend rate for Tribal members on the Tribal Employment Rights Of- fice Commission. • Approved the Tribe paying for the garbage and electricity at the Grand Ronde Commu- nity Resource Center until the building is vacated. • Authorized Tribal Council, the Grand Ronde Police Depart- ment and the Tribal Attorney’s Office to work on proposed amendments to the Public Safety Ordinance regarding concealed weapons possession. • Approved placing the archive of Smoke Signals newspapers on the History Oregon Newspaper Web site operated by the Uni- versity of Oregon. • Authorized the Land and Cul- ture Department to stage an exhibit this year at the Willa- mette Heritage Center called “Kuri-tseqw Tilixam – River People of the Willamette.” • Approved allowing two medical professionals to reside in Tribal market rate housing with the approval of the General Manag- er’s Office. Housing availability is a significant factor in recruit- ing medical professionals to work at the Tribal Health and Wellness Clinic.
