Smoke Signals 15 SEPTEMBER 1,2013 Coming of Age Ceremony meeting As noted in the July 15 Smoke Signals, a joyous group of women are hard at work to bring back a tradition in our culture which hasn't occurred in more than 100 years. The first meeting was held on July 18 at the Youth Education Building and was open to all family members both male and female. The following is the the date of the next meeting up until the actual Ceremony is held Sept. 25-29, 2013. Please be aware that the meeting is open to any female youth, adult or Elder who is committed to participating in this amazing opportunity. The meeting will be held at the Youth Education Building and dinner will be served. For more informa tion, contact Lisa Leno at 503-879-1471. 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10 Looking for scholarships? There are numerous scholarship opportunities offered for students to' apply to each year. The majority of scholarships for fall termsemester are due between January and April of each year. Don't miss your chance to apply for FREE money for college! The Tribal Higher Education programs are here to assist you in your application process. You can also utilize a scholarship search engine to help you locate scholar ships. If you use a scholarship search site, be sure to read the privacy policy to ensure you are using a site that will not sell your contact information. New CTGR Higher Education Program deadlines set There are now only two Higher Education programs depending on whether you are full-time or part-time. The deadline for the Full-Time College program is at least 30 days before the start of classes. The deadline for the Part-Time College program is at least 10 days before the start of class. They did such an amazing job making videos about some of the camps and programs that were available to them this summer and we are so proud to share them with you! www.grandronde.orgmedia-camp LIBRARY HOURS: Monday - Friday: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. (closed Monday - Friday: noon - 1 p.m.) Saturday: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. SUMMER PROGRAMS: June 17-July 31 participation as fol lows: Reading Incentive Program: We had 60 youth signed up for ' the program, but only 22 of the registered youth turned in reading logs. The 22 youth read 710 books in the six-week period. We had nine readersyouth who were in grades pre-school-sec-ond grade; nine readers were in third through fifth grade; and four readers were in sixth and seventh grade. Readers represented eight school districts that included Willamina, Sheridan, McMinnville, Salem, Dallas, Tualatin, Eugene and CTGR pre-school. Approxi mately $800 was spent on prizes for the Book Buck Store for youth to purchase and for drawing prizes. Activity Sessions: Saturday, June 29 and July 20, from noon to 2 p.m. June 29 "Dipping Up the Past": We had four people attend this session. Activities included a mini archaeology dig, making papyrus bookmarks with our names in hieroglyphics, fossil rubbings art and making family trees. July 20 "Dipping for Treasure": We had five people attend this ses sion. Activities included reading a pirate book and making treasure chests, learning about kinds of money, including coins and trade beads, talking about rocks and gems, rock identification and making gemstone rings, and completing an "all about me" activity sheet and inserting it into a time capsule to open in five years. Library Cultural Exhibit: A new culture exhibit will be as sembled and on display in the library from September through November. The library will hold an opening event for the exhibit with the date to be determined. New Library Programs: The following program will be offered monthly September through December. Native American Movie Night: First Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. (Youth under 13 must be accompanied by parents). Limited seating. Sept. 5: "The Last of His Tribe" Oct. 3: "A Thief of Time" Nov. 7: "Smoke Signals" Dec. 5: "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" Donations: We appreciate the following contributors to the li brary collection during this reporting period: Our thanks to Michele Warner, Sharleen Cradit, Tavern Books, Kim Paul of Books Galore and Penny Topel of the Sheridan Library. Donated items have been cataloged and are shelved for circulation. They are great additions to the collection. REMINDER: Donations must be clean; no cassettes, VHS or mass-produced paperback books please.
