Smoke Signals NOTICE Monthly Tribal Council Wednesday Meetings DATE TIME Wednesday, Aug. 14 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28 5 p.m. Please note that theme timet and date are subject to change If needed. General Council meeting Sunday, Sept. 8 11 a.m. Tribal Community Center 2 AUGUST 1,2013 Dear Smoke Signals: I want the people of Sheridan to know that I, after reading the July 1 iuHue of Smoke Signals, will never again attend "Phil Sheridan Days," nor spend a single dime in your community. I will try to organize my friends and acquaintances to boycott your village and do the same. Hob White apologized if he "damaged some egos." Well, I am continually astounded by how ignorant and insensitive some people can be. I do not think we are talking about a few "damaged egos" here. We are talking about millions of murdered Native Americans at the hands of a national policy of extermination - a policy endorsed by The Oregonian as recently as 1900. The great American Phil Sheridan considered Native peoples sub-human and was a leader in a campaign that raped, murdered and starved millions of unarmed, innocent people in one of the worst holocausts in history. How about an apology for that? Ken McCormack Neskowin, Ore. Dear Smoke Signals: We were delighted to have our surprise wedding at this year's Grand Ilonde Elders dinner, and extremely thankful to the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde for their support. Hy sh'que' (Thank you in Xwlemi the Lummi Nation language), especially to the Elders Dinner Committee for being most welcoming and allowing us to join their program and helping us with many technical details, including in finding the minister Vic tor Cureton, who willingly and gracefully made time for us on such short notice and to his uncle, Ken Haller. To Bob Tom, as master of ceremonies, who brought laughter and playful ness to our day Hy sh'que' O'Siam' Hy sh'que' also to the trumpeter, who stepped in at the last minute to play "Edelweiss" from 'The Sound of Music" for the grand entry of the wedding and unknowingly chose a favorite family song "You Are My Sunshine" as we closed. Hy sh'que to the band, who played a lo-o-o-ng medley of fast songs that became our first dance. Hy sh'que' Spirit Mountain Lodge and Casino staff and crew for mak ing our stay so easy and happy from the front desk and Kayla to the bell hops, housekeeping. And in the Lummi tradition, we want to say a spe cial Hy sh'que' to the cooks, because the love that they put in their food provided sustenance for all who ate. We noticed the each worker accepted and included our best man whose disabilities required special assistance throughout our stay. The casino workers were also kind and professional to our party Hy sh'que' We want to thank all those who took photos and are willing to send them to us at the following e-mail address: boznarrowsyahoo.com Hy sh'que'. To each of the 428 Elders who attended and made our day especially meaningful, added a kerchief to the blanket and to each among them who stopped to give a few words of encouragement Hy sh'que' O'Siam' If we have left anyone out, we apologize, and please understand that we appreciate all that you have done to help in celebration of our lives together. Hy sh'que' The Grand Ronde people will be forever in our hearts and in the stories that we pass down through our family and friends for generations to come.
