Kennedy has been named Hoard Member of the Year by the North west Portland Area Indian Health Hoard. The announcement was made on Tuesday, July 9. The selection, by her peers, re sulted from "her consistent leader ship in Indian health issues," said Joe Finkbonner, executive direc tor of the Health Hoard. "Cheryle reaches out to the Portland-area delegates to gather input in her role as the Portland area representa tive of the Secretary of Health & Human Services' Tribal Advisory Council." With this selection, delegates rec ognized "the tremendous dedication that Cheryle has committed to in the STAC. The delegates also have a tremendous amount of confidence in Cheryle's understanding of not only Portland-area health issues, but also the capacity differences Cheryl A. Kennedy for every Tribe in the North west," Fink bonner said. "Cheryle also under stands 'health' beyond the Indian health system, which makes her a more effective representative for the Portland area." "I was astonished to be awarded Hoard Member of the Year," Ken nedy wrote to her colleagues on Tribal Council. Previously, she was elected to fill the vacant secretary position. Kennedy said her goal is to "represent the Tribe well, promote legislative changes that are needed to improve the health status of In dian people, and to acquire all the funds we need to provide health care." Kennedy has served on the Health Hoard since the late 1980s. Volleyball nights held on Wednesdays The Tribe's Recreation Program holds open volleyball from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Tribal gym.
