This year the Tribe was fortunate enough to have five Tribal member participants in NIU's Summer Institute: Jeff Mercier and Halona Butler from the Tribe's Education Department; Kathy Cole from the Tribe's Land and Culture Department; and Kyoni Mercier and ChyAnne Schlappie, high school students. . " " ' Cole taught Chinuk Wawa and chaperoned the high school students as well as provided support for staff. The group attended classes every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well as a few evening events. The classes consisted of classes in linguistics, Chinuk Wawa, teaching methods and a technology class. In the technology class, attendees all learned how to make an Ibook, creating three new books during NIU's two-week session. These books will be used in the Tribe's language program and attendees, with their new knowledge, will be able to create additional books for use in teaching Chinuk Wawa. Bobby Mercier attended the summer session one day and taught a lesson in Chinuk Wawa on making cordage. The Grand Ronde Language staff and high school students stood up with Bobby and sang songs in Chinuk for the rest of the participants. Jeff and Halona also put on a final presentation in Chinuk Wawa. They taught about their daily routine in the preschool classroom. Grand Ronde was well represented at NILI's Summer Institute. The entire group came back with much enthusiasm and knowledge gained, ready to put it all to work and addi tionally they earned four hours of college credit. Note: Culture classes are free for enrolled Grand Ronde Tribal members: No charge for the classes or materials. These classes are also free for Tribal member spouses, family and descendants - if materials (beads, dentalia etc.) are required, they must bring their own, use donated if available or reimburse for any matenals provided. See instructor for details.
