Eugene Area The Lifeways classes focus on the traditional culture and history of the many Tribes and bands that are the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Participants can learn a variety of skills, including carving, basketry, native art design, Chinuk Wawa language, traditional gathering, native plants identification and take visits to important cultural sites throughout western Oregon. The classes are for beginners as well as for those with advanced skills. You can explore a variety of activities, or focus on something specific, such as basketry. You can also help create gifts, such as beaded necklaces, for Tribal special events. There are activities for all ages and they are designed to provide Tribal member families opportu nities to come together. In 2013, the Lifeways activities will be held in Portland, Eugene and Grand Ronde. In Portland, there is also a hand-drum group, "Place of Our Ancestors," that drums and sings at Tribal events and activities. The group is looking for additional Tribal members who are interested in participating. Practices are usually held in conjunction with the Lifeways classes. Note: Culture classes are free for enrolled Grand Ronde Tribal members: No charge for the classes or materials.
