Smoke Signals 15 MARCH 1,2013 Attention All 6th-12th Grade Students It's time to start thinking about Spring Break! The Youth Education Department will be hosting the annual Spring Break trip at Camp Westwind in Lincoln City on Monday, March 25, through Wednesday, March 27, for middle and high school students. This is one of our most anticipated activities every year and space is limited. Permission slips will be available on Friday, Feb. 15. Students must turn in a permission slip signed by a parentguardian to reserve a space. Spaces are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. The Tribe's GED Program can fund Tribal members wherever they live (not just Grand Ronde) with class tuition and testing fee assistance. LIBRARY HOURS: Monday - Friday: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. (closed Monday - Friday: noon - 1 p.m.) Saturday: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Get Fired Up For Reading!: 183 Books have been read by 44 readers to date (Feb. 21). Our library dragon is long and plump. Our goal was to have at least 100 books read by Feb. 25, the last day of 2013 Chinese New Year Celebration. We will likely more than double that amount by the end date of the program. This reading initiative was open to all agesall readers. We had participation from ages 3 through Elder. Thank you to all who participated and helped us build the library dragon. Individual readers received a Lucky Red Envelope with gold coin, dragon emblem and chocolates inside. The Tribal Library staff will be participating in the Education Divi sion Community Forum on March 4 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The forum will be held in the Education Building classrooms (126 A & B). Please join in and share your ideas about what programs and activities you think are important to include in the division's five-year Strategic Plan. Library Volunteer Recruitment: The Tribal Library has two volunteer positions available. Volunteer duties include general library and collection maintenance and working on special projects in the library. An application, screening and orientation are required before volunteer placement. Applications are available at the library. If you are interested and have at least two hours per month that you can commit to working in the library, please apply. Recruitment is open until positions are filled. Reminder: The Tribal Library is a CCRLS Circulation Site: Use your Chemeketa Cooperative Regional Library Services card to do electronic holds on resources in the 18 partner libraries and items will be couriered here for check out and can be checked back in here, too. Basic Tutorials Offered at the Tribal Library: In February, the Tribal Library began offering its first in a series of personal learning tutorials on a number of computer-related topics to interested individu als. Beginning in March, in addition to "Entry-Level Computer Basics," the Tribal Library will be adding a session on "Entry-Level Internet Basics." This new tutorial session builds upon the basics of computer usage and is a good way for those with very little or no knowledge of Internet technology to be introduced to the topic. This presentation will cover: A brief look at the InternetWorld Wide Web; Basic layout of a Web browser; How to use the menustoolbars; Navigate around a Web site; Use a search engine (e.g. Google or Bing) to find basic information. These tutorial sessions are hands-on and will last between 45 to 60 minutes depending on the comfort level of the patron and which topics are being covered. Afterwards, further questions can be answered or topics reviewed and clarified; 2 and 4 p.m. timeslots are available but are limited to a maximum of two people per tutorial, so sign-up is first-come, first-served. If you are interested in knowing more about our "Computer Basics" or "Internet Basics" guides, or would like to sign-up for one of the tutorial sessions, call the Tribal Library at 503-879-1488. For those of you who are long-distance or independent learners, the Library also has hard copies of tutorial materials on hand to give out or mail to interested individuals.
