Smoke Signals 1 1 MARCH 1,2013 Floreine Constance Ray Feb. 10, 1917 - Dec. 28, 2012 Tribal Elder Floreine Constance Ray, 95, walked on Dec. 28, 2012, in Kailua Kona, Hawaii, following a brief illness. She was the Tribe's fifth eldest member at the time of her passing. She was the daughter of Jasper and Josephine Boydston. She resided in Grand Ronde and then she and her husband, Kenneth F. Ray, moved to Salem. She was preceded in death by Kenneth in 2002. She is survived by her only child, Judy Kansier; grandchildren Victor, Jeffrey Valera, Gina Valera Rentz and Michael Rentz; and great-granddaughter Ruby Rentz. She was a bookkeeper for Murphy Lumber Co. in Grand Ronde and then worked for the state of Oregon Real Estate Division until she retired. Floreine resided in Kailua Kona with her daughter and grandson, Jeff, for the last three years. She loved the weather and the beauty of the Big Island. She is missed every day. Aloha, Nanas. Recreation starts fitness classes The Tribe's Recreation Program offers two exercise programs in the Tribal gym. Vinyasa Flow Yoga, led by Melisa Chandler, is offered from noon to 1 p.m. Monday and Friday. The class focuses on the synchronization of breath with postures and is an active, athletic form of yoga. A cross training-style fitness class, led by Recreation Coordinator Matt Mosley, is offered from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Monday. B Education offers Chinuk Wawa classes The Tribe's Cultural Education Department offers adult Chinuk Wawa language classes from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday in Room 207 of the Tribal Education Building. H Teen Night Dance set for March 9 A Teen Night Dance will be held from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 9, in the Tribal gym for middle school-aged students only. Students in sixth through eighth grade must have an ID to get in. There will be door prizes, raffles, free pizza and other fun games, as well as a D J. Housing Authority hosting Healthy Homes workshops The Tribe will host two workshops on Monday, March 11, pre sented by the Environmental Protection Agency's Region 10 that will discuss Lead Awareness and Healthy Homes. The workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. in the Housing Authority's Board Conference Room, 28450 Tyee Road. Topics to be covered include the history and dangers of lead-based paint, disclosure notifications, the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule that places new requirements on property management com panies, landlords, contractors, renovators and painters; the keys to creating healthy homes and schools; indoor air quality, wood smoke and mold; understanding asthma triggers; pesticides, contaminants and toxic products; and tips to maintain a healthy environment. There also will be a demonstration of an X-ray fluorescence analyzer and participants are encouraged to bring items of concern from home to be tested for lead. Refreshments will be served.
