Smoke Signals returns to less-expensive standard rate General Council meeting Sunday, Jan. 6 11 a.m. Tribal Community Center With the Jan. 1, 2013, issue, Smoke Signals returns to the less expensive standard mailing post age rate that it used from 2009 through 2011. During preparation of the 2013 Tribal budget, Tribal departments were tasked with finding ways to be more efficient; ways to do the same job while spending fewer Tribal dol lars since the overall Tribal budget was facing a significant reduction. Publications suggested return ing to the standard mailing rate, which is approximately 50 percent cheaper than mailing the paper out first class. Tribal Council and Tribal senior administration approved the move, which will save the Tribe more than $100,000 this year in postage expenses. When Smoke Signals was previ ously mailed out at the standard rate, some Tribal members com plained about not receiving the publication in time to know about some Tribal events. However, the mailed Smoke Sig nals is not the only way to keep abreast of Tribal happenings and events. Smoke Signals is posted on the Tribal Web site, www.grandronde. org, as a PDF usually a couple of days before its official publication date. To access the paper, click on the News tab and then click on "Our Recent Issue." Tribal members can read the paper on their computer or print it out at home. In addition, many of the Tribal events promoted in Smoke Signals are advertised well in advance on the Tribe's Facebook page. Become a "friend" of the Tribe on Facebook and learn about Tribal events long before they are printed in Smoke Signals. Also, many of the articles and event notices are published in the News section of the Tribal Web site before they are printed in Smoke Signals. Be sure to check the Tribal Web site regularly for new articles and event announcements. "Saving Tribal members' more than $100,000 a year in mailing is a significant contribution by Publi cations to running a more efficient and less expensive Tribal govern ment," said Publications Coordi nator Dean Rhodes. "In addition, most papers in the country, Tribal and nonTribal, mail their editions at the standard rate. "I encourage our readers to take advantage of the available technol ogy so that they can keep abreast of Tribal events in a timely man ner. I also encourage other Tribal departments to plan ahead so that we can give Tribal members plenty of advance notice about Tribal events."
