Smoke Signals 1 1 NOVEMBER 1,2012 Volleyball nights begin The Tribe's Recreation Program has started an open volleyball night every Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Tribal gym. Volleyball is open to anyone who wishes to participate. For more information, contact Recreation Coordinator Matthew Mosley at 503-879-1369 or matthew. mosleygrandronde.org. Forest passes available The Tribe's Natural Resources Department has free annual Northwest For est Passes available for enrolled Tribal members. The pass is valid for one year from date of issue. The Forest Pass is valid at day-use sites in Oregon and Washington where "Recreation Pass Required" signs are posted. Some examples are Hebo Lake Picnic Site, Derek Road Trailhead, Quinault Rain Forest Trailhead, Tumalo Falls Trailhead, Lava River Cave Interpretive Site, Crane Prairie, Bagby Hot Springs Trailhead, Wickiup Plains Trailhead, Lake Serene Trailhead, Clear Lake Public boating site and West Fork Hum tulips Middle Trailhead. The Forest Pass does not cover fees for snow parks, some concessionaire-operated sites, developed campgrounds and cabin rentals, wilderness climbing and river permits. O Biological disease sampling discontinued The Tribe's Natural Resources Division will be discontinuing deer and elk biological disease sampling and annual drawing. The Oregon Department Fish and Wildlife, which conducted the lab analysis for the Tribe, will be focusing their Chronic Wasting Disease monitoring efforts along the Idaho and Nevada borders and in areas where deer and elk are farmed. Thank you to all those who have participated in this program. B Cultural Trust Board seeking grant applicants The Tribe's Cultural Trust Board received $6,359 for the 2013 grant year and is now accepting grant applications through Dec. 15. The board will finalize grant awards by Jan. 10 and applicants will receive notification of their grant application status by Jan. 15. This is the earliest the board has ever opened the grant cycle to allow more time for grantees to complete their cultural projects since final reporting is due to the Oregon State Cultural Trust each year by Aug. 31. Since 2009, when the Grand Ronde Cultural Trust Board started giv ing cultural grants, it has funded individuals' participation in Tribal Canoe Journey, sewing classes, moccasin making classes, an ethno botany project, a Chinuk Wawa project, research for a book about Tribal member families, camas digging, huckleberry picking, regalia making, wood carving and other cultural projects. Cultural Trust Board Chair Perri McDaniel and board member Kim Contreras will facilitate a "How to Apply for a Grand Ronde Cultural Trust Grant" workshop on Thursday, Nov. 15. Attendees should bring their cultural project idea for a Cultural Trust grant to the workshop to see if it is within the guidelines of the grant making program. The Natural Resources is offering a final first come first serve salmon distribution to currently enrolled Grand Ronde Tribal members who were unable to attend the August distribution and are interested. Please be ad vised once the salmon is gone, it is gone. Again, if you were unable to attend the August distribution we would like to welcome you. Unfortunately, we are unable to deliver to the satellite offices this distribution. MEMBERSHIP MUST show Tribal I.D.
