By Dean Rhodes Smoke Signals editor After 16 consecutive years of serving on Tribal Council, Reyn Leno is now Tribal chairman. Leno, who has served many years as vice chair, was elected 5-4 as Tribal chair during the Sept. 12 Tribal Council meeting. Leno voted for himself and was supported by Toby McClary, Jack Giffen Jr., Steve Bobb Sr. and June Sherer to become the official leader of the Tribe. Longtime Tribal Chairwoman Cheryle A. Kennedy, who served 10 years as Tribal chair, received four votes. She voted for herself and was supported by Kathleen Tom, Chris Mercier and newly-elected Jon A. George. "I want to thank the council for electing me," Leno said after the vote. "I want to acknowledge Cher yle Kennedy's years as chair. I will do the best job I can do." Kennedy and Giffen were then nominated for vice chair. Giffen won the vote 5-4. George and McClary were nomi nated for secretary with McClary winning the post in a 6-3 vote. D Restoration Celebration set for Nov. 18 The Tribe will celebrate its 29th anniversary of Restoration on Sunday, Nov. 18, in the Tribal plankhouse and gym. Members interested in volunteering to help plan the event should call Public Affairs at 503-879-1418. The day will begin with a gathering in the plankhouse, followed by a meal served in the Tribal gym and then a powwow. The Tribe was officially restored on Nov. 22, 1983, by President Ronald Reagan after 29 years of Termination. The celebration is being held on Nov. 18 because Thanksgiving falls on the 22nd this year. Special General Council meeting set A special General Council meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Valley River Inn, 1000 Valley River Way, Eugene, to brief area Tribal members on the private gaming initiative. B Education Open House set for Oct. 3 The Tribe's Education staff will hold a barbecue while teaching more about educational services offered at an Education Division Open House at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, in the Youth Education covered area. There also will be a raffle drawing and book giveaway in the Tribal Library. Festival includes encampment The Grand Ronde Tribe will hold a Tribal Encampment from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, as part of the three-day Willamette Falls Festival, which will commemorate the grand re-opening of the historic Oregon City-West Linn Arch Bridge. The encampment, to be held at Clackamette Park, will feature Native American drumming, dancing and craft demonstrations. The Willamette Falls Festival will be held from Friday, Oct. 12, through Sunday, Oct. 14. For more information, visit www.willamettefallsfestival.com.
