Tribal Government Day set Native films will be the highlight annual event By Dean Rhodes Smoke Signal editor Native films will be the focus of the annual Tribal Government Day being held between 9 and noon Friday, May 11, at the State Capitol in Salem. Starting at 9 a.m. in Hearing Room C of the State Capitol, films by the Umatilla, Grand Ronde, Burns Paiute, Klamath and Siletz Tribes will . be shown. The Grand Ronde Tribe will show a video about the Natural Resources Department's efforts to restore and protect Reservation land, as well as its 25th Restoration video. In addition to the films, a social gathering and networking event will be held in the Galleria as representatives from Oregon's nine federally recognized Tribes distribute informational brochures. Refreshments, provided by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, will be catered by Spirit Mountain Casino staff. At 1 1:30 a.m., Gov. John Kitzhaber will sign an American Indian Week proclamation. American Indian Week in Oregon is Sunday, May 13, through Saturday, May 19. The event marks the 11th anniversary of the passage of Oregon's state-Tribal government-to-government law. It is sponsored by the state Legislative Commission on Indian Services and endeavors to teach state employees and regular Oregonians about the state's nine federally rec ognized Tribes. The event is open to the public. D Request for Proposals ArchitecturalEngineering Services The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Women's Transition House Renovation and Addition The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde wishes to retain an ArchitecturalEngineering team to perform planning and design services for a Women's Transition House Renovation and Addition project. The Tribe plans to renovate an existing 2,280 sq. ft. house and construct a 1,560 sq. ft. addition to the home. It is anticipated that the existing house will include the kitchen, dining rooms, a living room, family room and 3 or 4 bedrooms. The addition will include 4 or 5 bedrooms, a storage room, a large laundry room, an adult lounge room, and additional bathrooms. The project is funded by a HUD Indian Community Development Block Grant. Indian preference applies to Indian-owned economic enterprises or organizations. B Foundation seeks artist fellowship applications The Native Arts and Cultures Foundation is seeking applications for its 2013 Artist Fellowships. Awards will be $20,000 and be made in six disciplines: Visual Arts, Filmmaking, Music, Dance, Literature and Traditional Arts. Application deadline is Thursday, June 21. Artists must demonstrate excellence, having made a significant impact in their discipline, earned respect from their colleagues and achieved recognition in the field. Work must be evolving and current. Native artists are defined as American Indian from federally rec ognized Tribes, Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian. In September, a panel will review the applications and fellows will be announced in November. Applicants must apply online at www.nacf.ususerregister.
