Tribal Council turns down beer garden at Rodeo Grounds By Ron Karten Smoke Signals staff writer Tribal Council has withdrawn its support for a beer garden that was planned for the Tribal Rodeo Grounds during the July 15-17 Spirit Mountain Stampede. Supporters from the Rodeo Spe cial Events Board and Tribal Coun cil had said the beer garden would increase interest in the event and hopefully increase revenue. However, the Culture Commit tee came out strongly against the proposal and many Elders joined them. The topic became a lengthy topic of discussion at recent Tribal Council meetings. "We need to keep our campus drug and alcohol free," said Tribal Elder and Culture Committee Chairwoman Kathleen Provost. "Exposing people to a beer garden is not healthy." The Rodeo Board resubmitted the beer garden request on June 28, again recommending the beer gar den accompany the Stampede, but Tribal Council honored the wishes of Tribal Elders and other opposed to serving alcohol on Tribal lands. "When the original vote was tak en, I was out of town on business," said Tribal Council member Wink Soderberg. "I told them I would vote yes so they could get the license, but that was subject to change when I returned. When the Elders didn't want it, we have to honor that, so I changed my vote." Tribal Council voted the second time and three supported the beer garden and six opposed the re quest. Tribal Council members Steve Bobb Sr., Jack Giffen Jr. and Chris Mercier supported the request while Chairwoman Cheryle A. Kennedy, Vice Chair Reyn Leno, Secretary Kathleen Tom and Tribal Council members Toby McClary, Val Sheker and Wink Soderberg were opposed. "I don't think it's wise," said Ken nedy. 'That's not to say that all of us people will become alcoholics if we have it. I just don't think it's wise for children to observe. I don't see what good can come of that. I would rather fill up their eyes with things that are wholesome and positive." Sewing classes offered Beginning sewing classes for Tribal girls and boys are being of fered by Tribal Elder Betty Bly. Participants will learn the basics of hand sewing and also how ' to use a sewing machine. Class size is limited to eight children. All materials will be provided and the class is free.
