6 MAY 15,2011 Smoke Signals 2006 Tribal Community Meetings were under way in Canyon ville, Eugene, Grand Ronde, Federal Way, Wash., and Portland, providing the widest access ever for Tribal members who live in the Pacific Northwest. Tribal Planning & Grants Development Manager Kim Rogers said the meetings concentrated on off-reservation and non-Indian gaming proposals "and the need for the Tribe to plan for these challenges." 2001 Tribal Chairwoman Kathryn Harrison was honored at the May General Council meeting for her years of dedicated service to the Tribe. She had announced that she would not be seeking re-election to Tribal Council. Tribal Council Secretary Reyn Leno pinned an honor corsage on her lapel while Tribal members gave her a standing ovation. 1996 Spirit Mountain Casino was advertising for positions in its "shiny new restaurant" Legends Steakhouse, which was scheduled to open July 1. The casino was advertising for cooks starting at $10 an hour, dishwashers starting at $7 an hour and bussers starting at $6 an hour, among other jobs. 1991 Grand Ronde Tribal Health Director Cheryle A. Kennedy received the 1991 Minority Health Conference's Outstanding Indi vidual Award. She was nominated by the Tribal Health Committee. Kennedy has been Tribal Health director since October 1984. 1986 Tribal Council authorized the start-up of the Social Ser vices Program, which will be BIA-funded and designed to provide counseling and family assistance to Grand Ronde Tribal members. The program also had responsibility for the Indian Child Welfare Act, but did not provide financial payments to Tribal members. Camp's theme is 'Art of the Canoe' "Art of the Canoe: Looking and Making Art from the Native People of the Pacific Northwest" is the theme of this year's summer camp offered by the Oregon College of Art & Craft's "Journeys in Creativity: Explorations in Native American Art" program. The program is a pre-college camp for Native American, Native Hawai ian and other indigenous teenagers ages 15 to 19. The camp is free to all students involved with the exception of travel to and from the camp. It will be held Aug. 8-21 on the Oregon College of Art & Craft campus in Portland. Students will live on campus with a chaperone for up to two weeks. Teens 15 to 17 years of age stay for one week while those 18 and 19 can stay the two weeks. The applications process is competitive and qualifying youth are selected by a review panel of Native American artists and college administrators. Completed applications must be received by June 1. If client has not worked for a period of time, client will need to submit a printout from their State Employment Office or printout from Oregon Self Sufficiency Office as verification of income. Rentaldeposit or utility assistance may be uti lized only one time in a 24-month rolling calendar period and is not to exceed the maximum contribution of $1,000 per household within any 24-month rolling calendar period. Medical Gas Vouchers Social Services will not provide gas vouchers for medical appointments, counseling or drug & alcohol treatment. The only exception to this is for scheduled treatment plans, (i.e.: radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, etc.) and has caused hardship on the family, medical gas vouchers can be distrib uted to meet the need of the circumstances. A copy of all scheduled treat ment plans must be received before client is eligible to receive this service. Assistance will end on the date of the last treatment appointment. The Saddle Club is closed on Thursday and Sunday. Everyone is invited to visit the horses and go for a ride. We will be serving the meal and eating at the covered area behind Youth Education, then playing softball at the ball field next to the gymnasium. This event will serve as the kickoffto the weekly Wednesday evening family softball events that were so popular last summer. .... I.. Ff-- Even if you don't play, please come out for the dinner, good times and to root on your family and friends. Please remember to bring your glove and any softball equipment you may have. We do have softballs and bats, but are limited in extra gloves. In the case of bad weather, we will be holding the rec activity in the gymnasium.
