Special General Council meeting Sunday, June 26 11 a.m. Tribal Community Center Tribal Council nominations 2 MAY 15,2011 Dear Smoke Signals: I would like to say thank you to reporter Ron Karten and all of the people who gave their stories in the recent article about Inter-generational Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that was in the May 1 Smoke Signals. These heartfelt stories are important in identifying the violence and trauma that has affected the Tribe for generations. I would like to add an other point to the article, in identifying methods to continue to perpetrate the violence on our next generation we must find ways to stop this. Personally, I grew up with my mother and grandparents telling me horror stories of atrocities, relocation, familial problems and seeing far more than most should ever be exposed to. I don't replicate this behavior on my children. I don't tell them horror stories of how our family has suf fered loss, been subjugated and abused. I do this because they are not old enough to understand the history yet. I tell them about the good things, I try to not replicate the negative behaviors that my parents and grandparents exposed me to. It is difficult to try and not repeat these behaviors on my children, and I don't always succeed. It's necessary to break the pattern of internal violence if I expect it to not be repeated by my children. I try to only reinforce the idea that they can only succeed in life and that failure cannot be blamed on the past. Again, this isn't because I want my children to be ignorant of their past, but I don't want them to feel defeated before they have started. After all, a greater man than I once said: "Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." Eirik Thorsgard, MAIS Roll 3489 Cultural Protection Coordinator Tribal Historic Preservation Officer See page 14 for more letters.
