MAY 1,2011 5 FGHrawfifi) Smoke Signals Members of th French Prairie Forum visited the Tribe on Friday, April 22. The group includes county commissioners, mayors, city council members, chamber of commerce members and tourism representatives from Clackamas County, Wilsonville, Aurora, Kelzer, Champoeg and Dayton. At right, Annie Von Domitz from the Oregon Travel Information Council in Salem admired the carving in front of the Tribal plankhouse, Achfa-hammi, which pays tribute to the Grand Ronde Trail of Tears that occurred 1 856. Below, Tribal member and Tribal Language & Culture Specialist Bobby Mercier spoke about the history and construction of the Tribal plankhouse. In addition to visiting the plankhouse, forum members toured the Tribal campus, met with Tribal Council members Reyn Leno, Wink Soderberg, Steve Bobb Sr., Jack Giffen Jr. and Chris Mercier, and dined at Spirit Mountain Casino for lunch, during which they met with casino Chief Executive Officer Rodney Ferguson. The tour was coordinated and led by Tribal Public Affairs Director Siobhan Taylor. 0 1? D EFFECTIVE MAY 1,2011 Changes to Social Services Emergency Assistance and Medical Gas Voucher Program For all income criteria programs, wage verification for past 60 days (wage stubs) will need to be submitted. If client has not worked for a period of time, client will need to submit a printout from their State Employment Office or printout from Oregon Self Sufficiency Office as verification of income. Rentaldeposit or utility assistance may be utilized only 1 time in a 24-month rolling calendar period and is not to exceed the maximum contribution of $1,000 per household within any 24-month rolling calendar period. Medical Gas Vouchers Social Services will not provide gas vouchers for medical appointments, counseling or drug & alcohol treatment. The only exception to this is for scheduled treatment plans, (i.e.: radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, etc.) and has caused hardship on the family, medical gas vouchers can be distrib uted to meet the need of the circumstances. A copy of all scheduled treat ment plans must be received before client is eligible to receive this service. Assistance will end on the date of the last treatment appointment. B PSU sponsors suicide prevention poster contest Our Healing Feathers Project, a suicide prevention awareness and well ness program at Portland State University, is sponsoring a poster contest for Native AmericanAlaskan Native junior high and senior high school students attending Oregon, Washington and Idaho schools. The theme is "Breaking the Silence" and entrants are asked to create posters that encourage young people to step forward and help their friends who may be expressing suicidal thoughts or have threatened to commit suicide. Posters must be 8.5-by-ll inches and can use photography, pencil, charcoal, paint and digital mediums. Applicants must be enrolled in sixth through 12th grades and be of Native descent. First-place winner receives a $100 gift certificate, second gets a $75 gift certificate and third receives a $50 gift certificate. Entries should include a separate piece of paper with the entrant's name, age, address, Tribal affiliation, e-mail address, school and phone number. One entry per student is allowed.
