Smoke Signals 13 MARCH 1,2011 Mary Stanton July 26, 1965 - Feb. 20, 2011 Tribal member Mary Stanton, 45, walked on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, in Portland, Ore. She was born on July 26, 1965, in Ely, Nev., the daughter of Rodrick "Budge" Stanton and Marcella May Norwest Selwyn. She moved from Nevada to Portland in 1995. She loved her family very much and especially being a grandmother. She was very artistic with beadwork, making dreamcatchers, sewing and quilting. Mary was a good cook and baker, and loved everything about her culture. From the time that she was 8 until she was 10 years old, she was a fancy dancer. She was a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. She is survived by her sons, Joseph Stanton of Pendleton, Ore., Matthew Stanton of Walla Walla, Wash., and Brett Hanson of Battle Mountain, Nev.; grandchildren, Shaun Stanton, Trinity Pierce, Kamihle Pierce, Jayse Pierce, Mary Stanton, Jackson Pierce, Ava Pierce, Isabel Stanton, Rheanna Schlechter, Aaliyah Hanson and Keira Agular; parents, Tony and Marcella Selwyn of Grand Ronde; sisters, Maria Stanton of Wells, Nev., Belinda Mercier and Shannon Stanton of Grand Ronde, Loretta Meneley of Lincoln City, Ore., and Stephanie Garcia and Noreen Selwyn of Wichita, Kan.; brothers, Badtemper "B.T." Brien of Grand Ronde, Lee Selwyn of Beaverton, Ore., and Shannon Stanton of Las Vegas, Nev.; and numerous nieces and nephews. . Viewing was held Friday, Feb. 25, in the Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center. A funeral service was held Saturday, Feb. 26, in the Grand Ronde Tribal gymnasium with burial in the Tribal Cemetery in Grand Ronde.
